Overview
A Bullock and the P Messara and L Gavranich stable have won 14 of their 28 races together at Scone, and they team up twice in the first two races on Monday. That partnership is the thread running through these Scone racing tips, because when it turns up at this track it rarely leaves empty handed: 23 of those 28 runners have finished in the first three.
The card itself is seven races on a turf track rated Good to Soft, starting with a 2406m Class 1 at 1:50PM and closing with a Benchmark 58 over 1312m at 5:30PM. In between there are two maidens for unraced and lightly raced types, a Benchmark 74 over 1859m that is the best race on the day, and a big field Class 1 sprint. Bookmakers had only opened markets on the first two races when this was written, so most of what follows is a form read rather than a price read. You will get a pick, a danger and a staking line for every race, plus the plays that carry the most weight.
Scone today: the setup
Good to Soft ground on a turf course, a mix of staying and sprinting trips, and a home team of local stables doing most of the running. S I Singleton has six runners on the card and Brett and Georgie Cavanough have six as well, so the trainer numbers below matter more than usual.
Horses with course form
Six of today’s runners have three or more starts here. Only two of them have won at Scone.

| S I Singleton | 76 | 14 | 39 | 18.4 | 51.3 |
| G Waterhouse & A Bott | 10 | 2 | 5 | 20.0 | 50.0 |
Two numbers jump out. A Bullock wins almost three in every ten rides here from a big sample, well clear of any other rider on the card. And the Messara and Gavranich stable wins two in five at Scone, which is an extraordinary return for a country track. Put the two together and you get the strongest angle on the day.

Scone race by race
Race 1: Kia Ora Plate (C1), 1:50PM, 2406m
Tasman Deel is the one, and the market agrees. Priced at $1.50 with Bet Right, this staying Class 1 sets up for the horse with the most reliable recent profile: four placings from five starts over the last three months, including a win, and a perfect record of finishing in the first three in two visits to Scone, one of them a win. Last start form of 2-3-1 reads like a horse that has found its level and is ready to take the next step.
The booking is the clincher. A Bullock rides for P Messara and L Gavranich, the combination that has won half of its 28 starts together on this track. Over 2406m the rider’s patience matters, and Bullock knows exactly where to be here.
Mission Strike, at $4.40, is the danger. Its form line of 9-5-0-5-2 finished with a second, and it has placed once from two starts in the past 90 days, so there is a little improvement coming. Pepperina has three course runs without troubling the judge. Tasman Deel to win, and the obvious leg for multis.
Race 2: Select Events Mdn Hcp, 2:25PM, 1750m
Does the market have this right? Reelflare at $2.30 and Shanti at $2.45 are almost inseparable, yet neither has won a race. Reelflare has two starts for a fourth and a second, and the John O’Shea and Tom Charlton stable will have it fitter third up. Shanti has placed twice from three starts for G Waterhouse and A Bott, who have struck twice from ten runners at Scone and placed with half of them.
The price worth taking is Moongleam at $5.00 with Unibet. Its two runs read 5-3, so it is heading the right way, and it gets the same Bullock, Messara and Gavranich treatment as Tasman Deel in the first. That combination does not need a horse to be the best credentialled in the field to win here; it needs the horse to be ready, and the stable’s placement record at Scone says it usually is.
Royal And Ready and Fly The Wind are scratched, which leaves six runners and a tactical race. Post Mark, Singleton’s runner at $8.00, has the gate and the rider (Mitchell Bell) to be in the finish. Win bet on Moongleam, small saver on Shanti.
Race 3: Magic Millions (Bm74), 3:05PM, 1859m
This is the best race on the card and the one to have a proper go at. Ocean Tsunami knows Scone better than anything else in the field: four starts here for a win and three placings, so it has missed the frame only once on this track. Its form line of 2-2-4-1-5-1 ends with a win, and it has a win from two starts in the last 90 days. On top of that it carries less weight than Wandjad, the obvious rival, and draws barrier 3.
S I Singleton puts Jasmine Urquhart-Warren on, and the stable’s Scone numbers are solid rather than spectacular: 14 winners from 76 runners and more than half of them placed. That is plenty when the horse itself has the course form.
Wandjad is the danger, and a serious one. It has won three of its last five starts, and the form line of 7-5-1-1-1-6 shows a hat trick before the most recent run. The question is the connections at this track. W T Wilkes has not won with any of 35 runners at Scone, and A Gibbons is winless from 29 rides here. Those numbers do not stop a horse in form, but they are enough to tip the balance at similar odds.
Disco Prince (4-1-1-9-2) is the each-way type of the rest, and Grandini has three course starts without placing. Markets had not opened when this was written. Back Ocean Tsunami to win, with a saver exacta taking it over Wandjad.
Race 4: Emirates Park Country Boosted Mdn Plate, 3:40PM, 984m
Two starts at Scone, two placings. Tennessee River has a 4-2 form line, and its only start in the last three months produced the second. Over a short sprint on familiar ground, that is the best credential in a maiden full of question marks. Reece Jones rides for T S Howlett from barrier 2, a draw that lets it hold a forward spot without working.
The unknown quantity is Gidgea Tree, an unraced runner for M D Griffith with A Bullock booked, and Bullock is the leading rider on the track. M D Griffith has placed with three of eight runners here. Envisioned has the most experience but a form line of 8-5-3-6-6-0 that has gone backwards lately.
Frog Rock is scratched. Tennessee River to win, keeping the stake modest because maidens over 984m throw up surprises.
Race 5: Scone Equine Hospital Mdn Hcp, 4:20PM, 1203m
Thirteen maidens and six of them have never raced, so start with the one that has shown something. Tickelova was beaten on debut and then ran second at its next start, its only run in the last 90 days. That is the sort of second up improvement you want in a race like this, and A Bullock picks up the ride for K A Lees.
The debutant to respect is Vaguely Red, from the Messara and Gavranich stable that wins two in five here, though it has Ashley Morgan aboard rather than Bullock. Halcyon Belle has a fourth and a sixth from two runs and gets Jean Van Overmeire, the rider with the best place rate at Scone today, but barrier 13 is a long way out over 1203m.
Simon Casey‘s Take It On is worth a mention only because his stable places with nearly two thirds of its Scone runners. Tickelova win and place.
Race 6: Darley Hcp (C1), 4:55PM, 1203m
Cosmic Jinks grinds; Pure Motive is all potential. Cosmic Jinks has placed in four of its last five starts and won one of them, with a form line of 7-5-2-2-1-2 that tells you it turns up every time. Braith Nock rides for Brett and Georgie Cavanough, and barrier 4 gives it the run of the race.
Pure Motive is the other Cavanough runner, with Mitchell Bell aboard. It won its only start, so the ceiling is unknown. The Bell and Cavanough combination has won eight of 39 starts together at Scone, which is a fair strike rate but not the kind of number that makes a once raced horse a bet at a short price.
Midnight Rhythm, The Dux Nuts and Bonoyster are all scratched. Mia Amore (4-1) and Thorsten (placed in all three of its recent starts) are next best. This is the race to play for a place: Cosmic Jinks each way.
Race 7: Emirates Park Country Boosted (Bm58), 5:30PM, 1312m
The Autumn Wind has had one start and won it, collecting $22,000 in the process. That is the most interesting runner in the last, because a Benchmark 58 is a soft spot for a horse that has already won a race worth that much. S I Singleton sends it out with MS M Weir from barrier 2, and Weir places on almost half of all rides at Scone.
Kermitisapet is the danger. It has a win and two placings from three runs in the last three months and finished its form line 0-3-5-1, so it arrives in form. Reece Jones rides for Tim Mcintosh. Overzone (1-2-2-4) has to work from barrier 13, and Ring My Bell has placed twice from three course starts without winning.
Laizabout and Sunday Bell are scratched. The Autumn Wind to win, with Kermitisapet the saver.

Where the money goes
NAP: Ocean Tsunami (Race 3, 3:05PM). Three top three finishes, one of them a win, from four goes at Scone, a weight edge over the in form Wandjad, and a stable that knows the track. The best race on the card has the most dependable course horse in it.
Value: Moongleam (Race 2, 2:25PM), $5.00 with Unibet. Its maiden form is improving and it carries the Bullock, Messara and Gavranich colours. At that price you are paid well for the partnership’s record here.
Banker: Tasman Deel (Race 1, 1:50PM). Short at $1.50 with Bet Right, but it has placed in four of its last five and both Scone starts. Use it as the anchor of any multi.
Each-way: Cosmic Jinks (Race 6, 4:55PM). Four placings from its last five runs, which is exactly the profile for a place bet in a big field.
Course angle: A Bullock riding for P Messara and L Gavranich. Fourteen wins from 28 starts together at Scone, and they combine twice today, in Races 1 and 2.
If the partnership lands both early, the stable will deserve to be the first name you look for at every Scone meeting from here on.
