It is day one of the Star Championships on Saturday at Randwick, with the Doncaster Mile and Australian Derby being the feature races on an excellent card from the Sydney-based racecourse.
Here are the best bets for the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival fixture, including a selection in the biggest races across the afternoon.
BEST BET: LINEBACKER
Doncaster Mile (Race 8)
It could be a memorable afternoon for trainers John O’Shea and Tom Charlton at Randwick on Saturday, as the pair have leading chances in the three biggest races on the card, including the Doncaster Mile where they will saddle up Linebacker.
O’Shea and Charlton will be confident of a big run from Linebacker in the $4 million event, as their horse was very impressive last time at the same venue in the Randwick Guineas (1600m). He defeated Broadsiding in that race, and that form has been given a huge boost since, as the Godolphin runner won the Rosehill Guineas on his next start, looking smart in the process.
This is a race O’Shea knows all about winning. The master trainer was victorious in 2004 with Private Steer, Racing To Win gave him success in 2006, while more recently, he completed his hat-trick with Somewhat in 2017. Linebacker looks to have what it takes to join those horses on the Randwick roll of honour.
This year’s content is a strong renewal, but Linebacker will have just 49kg on his back. He is a tough galloping horse who will relish the Doncaster Mile test. It is hard to look beyond him in this race.
SECOND BEST BET: AELIANA
Australian Derby (Race 9)
Trainer Chris Waller opted against running Aeliana in the Vinery Stud Stakes recently to keep his leading filly fresh for either the Australian Derby or Australian Oaks. It now looks like the former is the target for his star horse, and the betting suggests she has an excellent chance of taking the first prize.
Aeliana was last seen in the Rosehill Guineas where she did not get a clear run when finishing runner-up. She flew home to chase home Broadsiding, but had she had better luck on the day, it could have been an even better result for Waller’s filly.
The daughter of Castelvecchio could be much better over stiffer distances. She prevailed at Randwick earlier in her career, and she looks to have a great chance of her return to the Sydney racecourse in the prestigious Australian Derby.
BEST VALUE: SUNSHINE IN PARIS
T J Smith Stakes (Race 7)
Sunshine In Paris showed her class earlier this season when winning the Darley Champions Spring (1200m) at Flemington. She outbattled Right To Party and Bella Nipotina to prevail by just a short head in the Group One contest.
Trainers Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald opted to give their sprinter some time off after that victory, and she made her return to action in the Canterbury Stakes at Randwick (1300m) last month. Although she had to settle for fourth place, it was another solid run from the mare.
Expect Sunshine In Paris to be sharp once again with that run at Randwick behind her. She has the class to prevail in this field and she looks great value in the betting to do so.
