Best Bets For Flight Stakes at Randwick
The Flight Stakes is one of three Group One races at Randwick on Saturday, on what is a bumper day of top-class action at the Sydney-based racecourse.
Here is a look at the best bets for the Flight Stakes and some of the supporting races on the card.
BEST BET: APOCALYPTIC @ $1.86 with Boom Bet
Race no 6 (Flight Stakes)
Michael Freedman’s filly, Apocalyptic, is bidding to complete an impressive hat-trick of Group successes at Randwick in the Flight Stakes following victories in the Furious Stakes (1200m) and Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) respectively.
Apocalyptic is stepping up in distance to 1600 metres for the first time, but the way she has shaped in her races so far, she should appreciate this extra 200 metres. Her breeding suggests this distance will be perfect for her.
Freedman is in excellent form at this stage of the season. He had a big race double last weekend when Manaal and Marhoona prevailed at Rosehill Gardens. More success can follow with his talented filly, who he has described as being in great order for this latest assignment.
Tommy Berry keeps the ride on board the Tea Rose winner. He won the Flight Stakes back in 2015 with Speak Fondly and has had some big wins for Freedman this year. Berry sat patiently on board Apocalyptic in the Tea Rose Stakes. Expect him to do something similar, with the filly making her challenge in the final 400 metres of the race.
SECOND BEST BET: WITHOUT PEER @ $4.20 with Colossal Bet
Race no 4 (Dulcify Stakes)
Without Peer looked like a smart gelding when he broke his maiden at the first attempt as a two-year-old at Rosehill (1200m) at the back end of last season. Ciaron Maher’s runner battled well in the closing stages to prevail by a neck. Although he has not scored in two runs since then, he has fared well on both occasions.
The son of Pierata was denied by a nose in a hotly run handicap at Rosehill (1300m) on heavy ground on the second start of his career. He was runner-up behind Ninja, who looks set to be a Group One contender in the future. Then, on his most recent effort, he hit the frame at Rosehill in the Group Three Dynasty Quality.
Maher’s horse is set to be eased in class here to Listed level. With those three runs behind him, he has the experience to kick on and produce his best performance yet. Based on what these runners have shown so far, he is the one to beat in the Dulcify Stakes.
BEST VALUE: INCOGNITO @ $9.60 with Boom Bet
Race no 2 (Breeders’ Plate)
Eviction Notice and I’m Ya Huckleberry are fighting it out for favouritism at the top of the betting for the Breeders’ Plate, but both horses are worth taking on with Incognito, who is trained by Michael Freedman. The colt is by Stay Inside, and with the stable in such strong form, it would be no surprise to see a big run.
The Breeders’ Cup has attracted nine entries, three of which are from Gat Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s yard. That could suggest there isn’t strong confidence in either of those three horses from the training operation. Freedman has opted to make just one entry, so his eggs are in one basket with Incognito, who is excellent value in this race.
