The Sydney Everest Carnival opens at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday with the Golden Rose Day.  The feature race is the Golden Rose, a contest open to three-year-olds, and is worth $1 million in prize money.

Here is a look at the best bets for the Sydney Everest Carnival Opener, including a selection in the feature race of the afternoon.

Tempted Golden Rose Stakes (Race 8)
GRINGOTTS Shannon Stakes (Race 9)
$3.80

BEST BET: TEMPTED

Golden Rose Stakes (Race 8)

Connections of Tempted will be hoping their filly can feature in The Everest later in the season, and she can take a big step towards that $20 million race with victory in the Golden Rose Stakes at Rosehill Gardens.

Tempted is the only filly in the field. She will take on eight rivals in the 1400-metre contest. Her form as a two-year-old was outstanding, and if she takes another step forward as a three-year-old, it should be an exciting campaign ahead for the Godolphin-owned runner.

Since 2009, when the Golden Rose was given Group One status, Godolphin have been victorious on six occasions in this race, including in 2024 when Broadsiding prevailed. Tempted tops the betting to keep up their excellent record, and it is hard to look past her from beating the boys.

Trainer Chris Waller has four runners in the contest as he bids for his first victory. One of those is Beiwacht, who will also carry the Godolphin royal blue silks. Tempted’s stablemate may provide the strongest competition here and chase the filly home for second place.

SECOND BEST BET: GRINGOTTS

Shannon Stakes (Race 9)

In what was his first run of the season, Gringotts showed a lot of heart in the Group One Winx Sakes, where he was less than three lengths behind the winner, Via Sistina, at the finish. That prestigious contest came on heavy ground, but the six-year-old was still able to be competitive.

A return to better ground, and an ease in grade for this Group Two contest makes Gringotts the leading contender for the penultimate race on the card for this Sydney Everest Carnival Opener meeting. Expect to see him much sharper than he was at Randwick.

Ciaron Maher’s runner has been drawn in barrier seven, but with just 12 runners in the field, that should not trouble rider Tommy Berry too much. This is a great chance for Gringotts to get back to winning ways and put himself in Group One contention.

BEST VALUE: SNOW IN MAY

Golden Pendant (Race 7)

Snow In May was hampered with a terrible barrier draw on her season reappearance in the Group Three Mona Lisa Stakes at Wyong earlier this month. However, she still hit the frame, finishing a close third behind Just Feelin’ Lucky and Overriding respectively.

The daughter of The Autumn Sun will be receiving weight from Manaal and Firestorm in this race, and that could make all the difference at the finish. She rarely runs a bad race, and with a much better draw (barrier two) this time, she has a great chance of landing this contest.
