Race 8
Godolphin have a strong hand in this year’s Golden Rose field, as their royal blue silks will be carried by Broadsiding and Traffic Warden. Those two horses could be set to fight it out at the finish, and the preference must go to the former, who has been handed the perfect draw in barrier one.
This is Broadsiding’s first run in over 100 days, but he has shown in the past that he goes well fresh. His trainer James Cummings will have him ready for this contest as he bids to extend his winning run on the track to five races.
Last time out at Eagle Farm, the three-year-old won by over four lengths, as his rivals could not handle his speed in the closing stages of the race. If he takes another big step forward, he is going to be hard to beat again.
SECOND BEST BET: AMELIA’S JEWEL
Race 7
Connections of Amelia’s Jewel will have been delighted with their horse’s performance at Randwick earlier this month. Despite it being her first run since May, she finished her race strongly to run on for second place. That outing will have sharpened her up ahead of the Golden Pennant.
The five-year-old mare has an excellent record on the track, with nine wins from 17 appearances. A lot of her success has come over this 1400m distance, so it is no surprise that she remains over this trip.
Tommy Berry will tuck his runner in at the back of the field in the early stages of the race. If she is within a couple of lengths of the leader with 400m to go, expect her to reel in the horses ahead of her.
Best Value: Amor Victorious
Race 9
Amor Victorious will be carrying just 53kg on his back in the Shannon Stakes. It is a big drop in weight for the five-year-old, who represents the best value on this strong card from Rosehill Gardens.
After a strong start from the barriers, Amor Victorious finished third on his last run at this course. Bjorn Baker will be positive again here from barrier five. If the rider can just reserve a little more gas this time, he will have an excellent chance of going two places better.
