Rosehill Racing Tips 1 August 2026 — can the Waller yard clean up?
Rosehill Racing Tips 1 August 2026 — can the Waller yard clean up?
Chris Waller turning up to Rosehill with a hand that strong always warps a meeting. It changes how races get ridden, it shortens markets, and it forces you to decide whether you want to fight the stable or ride the wave. On this three-race slice of the card, he’s got numbers in the 12:35 and the right jockey bookings around him, and that alone makes today’s betting puzzle feel a bit sharper than your standard winter metro.
Below are my Rosehill racing tips for Saturday 1 August 2026, built around what matters: who’s actually in form right now, who maps to get the run, and which stables and riders consistently convert chances at this track. It’s Turf racing, the distances sit in that awkward 1300m to mile pocket where tempo and barriers matter, and there are a couple of horses whose profiles scream “bet” rather than “watch”.
Rosehill — the setup
We don’t have a published going in the data, so I’m treating this as a neutral Rosehill read: position and rhythm still matter, and the 1300m to 1640m range often rewards horses that can hold a spot without burning petrol early.
Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have only one or two starts at Rosehill, so I’m leaning harder on current form lines, barriers, and the connections that repeatedly hold their nerve here.

Where the course stats do help is at jockey and trainer level, because the samples are real.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| J B McDonald | 55 | 17 | 33 | 30.91 | 60.00 |
| Zac Lloyd | 53 | 16 | 28 | 30.19 | 52.83 |
| N Rawiller | 35 | 4 | 18 | 11.43 | 51.43 |
| C Schofield | 32 | 5 | 15 | 15.63 | 46.88 |
| Tim Clark | 48 | 8 | 21 | 16.67 | 43.75 |
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M J Dunn | 8 | 4 | 7 | 50.00 | 87.50 |
| C J Waller | 182 | 31 | 76 | 17.03 | 41.76 |
| Richard & Will Freedman | 29 | 4 | 10 | 13.79 | 34.48 |
Two quick takeaways I’m happy to bet with: McDonald hits the frame three times in five at Rosehill, and Zac Lloyd isn’t far behind. On the training side, Dunn’s Rosehill record is ridiculously efficient (small sample, but eight runners is enough to respect), while Waller’s volume tells the proper story: he places just under half his Rosehill runners and wins often enough that you can’t casually oppose him.
Race-by-race
Race 1: Midway (Bm72) — 11:25, 1531m
Hellova Nature is the horse I want onside early. That form line of 21121 isn’t decorative, it’s a pattern: this horse keeps turning up and landing a punch. From gate 4, Mollie Fitzgerald should be able to lob in a sensible spot without doing anything heroic, and that matters over this quirky 1531m trip where you don’t want to be chasing from last at the bend.
The race has a couple that can be thereabouts, but not many arriving with genuine momentum. Koios (391132) brings consistent recent figures and he’s drawn to get cover (gate 8), but he’s asked to give away the feel of a perfect run if Hellova Nature gets its own rhythm. Attractiveness (5135) draws 1 and that can either be a gift or a curse, depending on whether Schofield can avoid being pocketed when the pressure goes on.
Danger: Koios. He keeps finding the line, and Zac Lloyd’s Rosehill record is strong enough that if the race turns into a squeeze from the 600m, he’s the one I fear most running over the top late.
Staking: Win bet Hellova Nature. Small saver quinella Hellova Nature with Koios if you want a bit of protection.
Race 2: Tab Highway Hcp (C3) — 12:00, 1312m
This is the kind of race where you can get seduced by the big field and forget the simplest point: Sobek is unbeaten (111) and he’s drawn to control his own story from gate 3. Izzy Neale doesn’t need to be a Rosehill superstar here, she just needs to ride the horse he is: roll forward, hold a spot, and make the backmarkers circle. Over 1312m, that’s often the whole ball game.
The best part is the weight setup. Sobek carries 121.2, not one of the anchor imposts, and he should land in the first four without spending. Compare that to a few rivals who look forced into awkward tactics: Wayburn has been honest (7-4122) but is drawn 11 and gives away track position; Storm Merchant (4-32102) comes up with gate 15 and will need luck plus timing; and Indi Springs is flying (5-12112) but drawn 22, which is a tax you feel before you even talk about ability.
Danger: Indi Springs. He ran second on his only Rosehill start, and if the speed’s hot enough that the wide gate doesn’t matter, he’s the one with the profile to keep coming when others have peaked.
Staking: Sobek to win. If you’re playing multiples, I’d anchor Sobek and use Indi Springs and Wayburn as the main inclusions underneath.
Race 3: Kia Ora Bloodlines To Headlines (Bm72) — 12:35, 1640m
The market usually gets this wrong because it overreacts to “Waller has five in it” and then guesses which one is the stable pecking order. I’m not guessing. I’m backing the horse with the cleanest profile for 1640m and the run that sets up without fuss: Columbus.
He comes in off 321-1, which tells you two things at once. He’s improved through a prep, and he’s come back from a break and picked up where he left off. He also gets the best rider on the card for this track: J B McDonald wins close to a third of his Rosehill rides and hits the frame 60% of the time. When you can pair that reliability with a horse that looks like it’s still going up, you don’t overthink it.
The obvious threat is the Waller pair with form that pops. Barking Mad (6-5711) is on a streak and Rawiller’s Rosehill placing record is excellent, while Sponars (122231) draws 1 and can run the race exactly how Rachel King wants from the inside. The catch is they might both end up needing the same ideal run. Columbus doesn’t. Gate 6 gives McDonald options: forward if it’s slow, or one off if someone else wants to lead.
Danger: Barking Mad. Two wins on the bounce and Rawiller’s the sort of rider who will make a decision at the 600m rather than wait for luck. If he gets the jump, he can pinch it.
Staking: Columbus to win. Exacta saver Columbus with Barking Mad if you want to keep the Waller/Rawiller combo from ruining your day.

The plays
If you only want one bet, I’m making Sobek (12:00) the meeting’s anchor. Unbeaten horses drawn to land on speed at 1300m win a lot of races, and this setup lets him dictate instead of react. For the punters who like a second string, Columbus (12:35) is the one I’d most happily back straight out again: he profiles as a progressive miler, and when you’re getting J B McDonald at Rosehill you’re buying a ride as much as a horse.
Value hunters can make a case for Koios (11:25) as the “if it goes wrong for the favourite” runner. He’s consistent, and he maps to get the last crack if the leaders overdo it. The safest multi piece is still Sobek. The course angle I’m carrying forward is simple and repeatable: when McDonald has a live chance in these mid-grade races at Rosehill, you treat it as a serious push, not a neutral booking.
Keep an eye on how riders handle wide barriers in Race 2, because that pattern will matter again the next time Rosehill serves up a big-field 1300m handicap.
