Golden Slipper Day is the pinnacle of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. There are five Group One races on the card, including the world’s richest two-year-old contest, the Golden Slipper Stakes.
Here is a preview of this year’s Golden Slipper Stakes and the best bets for the afternoon at Rosehill Gardens.
BEST BET: TEMPTED
Race 8
James Cummings has two runners in this year’s Golden Slipper, but Tempted is by far his best chance of landing the richest two-year-old contest in the world. The talented filly enhanced her reputation last time out when prevailing in the Group Two Reisling Stakes at Randwick over 1200m.
Cummings has booked Blake Shinn for the ride on Tempted in the Golden Slipper. The Melbourne champion jockey was successful in this race in 2024 when he partnered Lady Of Camelot. He was also victorious in 2016 with Capitalist, so is an excellent choice of rider.
Those watching the clock in the Reisling Stakes will have noticed that Tempted finished half a second faster than the colts did in the Todman Stakes on the same card. This will be just her fifth career run, and she is likely to take another step forward.
Tempted has been drawn in barrier one, right next to her biggest rival, Wodeton. Six of the last 18 Golden Slipper winners have come from barrier one, so it is clearly a good place to be at Rosehill in this lucrative two-year-old contest.
SECOND BEST BET: PRIVATE HARRY
Race 9
Unbeaten sprinter Private Harry faces the toughest test of his career so far in The Galaxy on Golden Slipper Day. He just about got into the final field on what will be his first attempt at Group One level.
Private Harry produced an eye-catching performance in his trial win at Rosehill Gardens last month, leading from the barriers to the winning post. The son of Harry Angel got the better of Champions Sprint winner Sunshine In Paris by just under two lengths.
As all sprinters seem to do, Private Harry is explosive out of the barriers. He can gain ground on his rivals in the opening 100 metres of a race. Trainer Nathan Doyle was also quick to praise the horse’s cruising speed in that victory at Rosehill last time out.
Doyle has been pleased with the progress Private Harry has made over the last few months. He looks like a huge star in this sprint division, and this can be the first of many Group One victories in the young horse’s career.
BEST VALUE: AELIANA
Race 6
The betting for the Rosehill Guineas is dominated by the James Cummings-trained Broadsiding, who is biding to add to his impressive record on the track. However, there is value against the Godolphin runner in the form of Aeliana. Chris Waller’s filly was just over a length behind Broadsiding in the Hobartville Stakes at the same course last month. That form can easily be reversed.
Aeliana is the only filly in this year’s Rosehill Guineas. She will carry 2kg less than any other runner in the line-up. She has also been fortunate to land barrier one following the draw for the 2000m race.
This distance looks ideal for the daughter of Castelvecchio, so take her to add her name to the roll of honour at Rosehill Gardens in this Group One contest.
