Race 1: Yackandandah Park Mdn Plate — 2:00pm, 1739m
Earthly Crown has been building to this. Four runs of one-paced maiden form (7-7-7-8) suddenly clicked last start with a win, and horses that break through in a maiden often back it up quickly, especially stepping out to 1739m where they can find their rhythm rather than being asked to sprint. He’s turned two runs into one win and one placing across his last two starts, which is the kind of trajectory that’s easy to back against a field this random.
Fierce Ruby is the one to watch behind him. She’s finished runner-up last start after an eighth the run before, and trainers Ben, Will & JD Hayes have found the frame with three of their last seven runners at this track — not a specialist number, but enough to know they’re not sending them here cold. If the tempo is even moderately genuine she gets the chance to finish over the top of one-paced types.
