Bets of the Day — Thursday 22 October

Overview

Snippety Legend is the best bet of the day, a horse that has finished in the first three at all four of his Geraldton starts, winning three, and lines up in a field of seven in the Geraldton opener. Natasha Faithfull rides for A P Scally, a combination that has won three of 11 at the track.

Ipswich has been abandoned, so this morning’s update replaces both Ipswich selections. That makes three selections from two meetings: Snippety Legend at Geraldton, and Overshadow and Made In Italy at Gosford, all with live prices at the time of this update. Every price below was the best on offer from our partner bookmakers at the time, so check before you bet.

The best bet

Snippety Legend, Geraldton Race 1, 1:22, 2.10 with Palmerbet.

Four visits to Geraldton, four finishes in the first three, three of them wins. That is the best course record on the card for a horse with more than two runs here, and it comes in a seven-horse Benchmark 70 where nothing else matches that hit rate. He won a race of this grade here in March and ran third in a Bm70+ at his most recent Geraldton start on 30 April. Natasha Faithfull rides for A P Scally, and the pair have won three of 11 at the track.

The danger is Divine Inanna, $3.80 with Bet Right. She won at her only previous Geraldton visit and has a win from two runs over the past 90 days, recent form Snippety Legend cannot show. Gold Keeper places often here but has won only once from 11 Geraldton runs. Snippety Legend is the win bet.

The value bet

Overshadow, Gosford Race 1, 1:15, 4.60 with Bet Right.

Overshadow has won one of his three runs over the past three months and placed in another, and a form line of 3-7-7-1-2-5 says he found his level this preparation. James Harding has brought only two runners to Gosford and both placed, one of them a winner. Braith Nock jumps from barrier 2, which should give him a handy spot in a field of six.

The favourite, Ouragan at $3.00 with Bet Right, has placed in six of his seven runs over the last three months without winning one, and that is where the value sits. Legaselli is the danger: the three-year-old gets a big weight pull, draws the rail and has a win among four recent starts, and if he leads unpressured he could be hard to catch over 1600m. Overshadow is a win bet, and the price has drifted since last night.

The quaddie angle

Made In Italy, Gosford Race 5, 3:40, 3.30 with Ladbrokes.

Race 5 opens the Gosford quaddie, and Made In Italy is the horse to anchor it on. It draws barrier 3 over 1600m, has placed twice from three runs in the last three months, and K McEvoy rides. McEvoy has four wins and ten placings from 18 rides at Gosford. A form line of 3-2-3-3-2-5 is honest rather than brilliant, but in a maiden that is often enough.

The two main rivals both have something to answer. Markos Port has placed at all three runs in the last three months but draws barrier 14, and Koibito, the $2.90 favourite with Unibet for Waterhouse and Bott, has run second in three of its last five without winning. Regan Bayliss rides Koibito and wins more than a quarter of his Gosford rides, so it is the danger, but Made In Italy is the cleaner single to build the quaddie around.

How these were picked

All three selections come from our full previews for Geraldton and Gosford. We also covered Mornington today, and Ipswich, where both original selections came from, has since been abandoned.

The top picks at the remaining meetings did not make it because their markets were still not open at the time of this update. That covers Aldezor at Geraldton, Determined Rose at Mornington and Peleus at Gosford. At Mornington, Deadly Force at $1.60 with Bet Right and Bifrost at $4.20 with Neds were the priced alternatives. Snippety Legend‘s course record is stronger than anything Deadly Force has shown after one start, and Overshadow is the bigger price of the two value cases.
