Northerly Stakes Nominations – Where It All Begins
Named after a champion racehorse, the Kingston Town Classic is an 1800m feature race that is mostly comprised of local Western Australian horses. We often get to see an up and coming star in the race with many WA horses heading east in the following year to contest several big races.
Interstate gallopers will often head to WA in order to compete in the Kingston Town Classic; the locals have often thwarted their efforts, although Stratum Star and Moriarty were successful interstate visitors.
Northerly Stakes Barrier Draw – When, Where And How Does It Work?
The barrier draw will be conducted on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
A representative for each horse is given the task of selecting a mini cup or similar item to see which barrier their respective horse has drawn.

Is There A Barrier Draw Bias in the Northerly Stakes?
When assessing the barrier draws of recent winners in the Northerly Stakes, there does not appear to be a bias. Horses have been winning from a mixture of inside, middle and outside draws.
Along with a variety of barriers, both topweights and lightweights have been successful in the race in the past decade which makes for exciting racing as the Kingston Town Classic is the final Group 1 race for the calendar year.
