BEST BET 🏆
Race 8: No. 2 AVATEA ($2.60 Palmerbet)
Local galloper AVATEA is in great touch this time in and looks the one to beat in this contest. Last start, the Divine Prophet gelding clobbered his rivals in a Class 3 Hcp, here over 1250m. Putting almost four lengths on them, he ran the trip in personal best time, covering the journey, 4.6 lengths slower than benchmark, the best here. He also recorded the fastest final 800m, 400m and 200m sectionals for the race. Justin Stanley was aboard that day and remains in the saddle here. He gets the gun-run today from gate two and should be leading on settling. Already a three-time winner on his home track, he will take beating here.
NEXT BEST 🥈
Race 7: No. 3 STAR STATUS ($4 bet365)
Locally-trained by Fred Weiland, STAR STATUS is now three starts into this preparation and has the runs on the board to suggest a home-track victory is on the cards today. Last start, the Medaglia D’oro gelding recorded another third-up win when he finished too strong for them in a BM70 Hcp over 1900m at Townsville. He ran that out, 5.1 lengths slower than benchmark, still the best in this field. He also posted the fastest final 800m to 200m sectionals for the race. Nathan Thomas was aboard that day and sticks with him here. He maps to settle near mid-field today and with a clear run to the line, he looks hard to hold out again.
BEST VALUE 💰
Race 10: No. 7 FOCUS ($5.50 Unibet)
Townsville trainer Alby Molino saddles-up FOCUS here and in a smart field, looks a genuine chance at odds today. Last start, the Smart Missile gelding was second-up off a lengthy 23-week absence when he beat all but one home in a BM65 Hcp over 1000m at Bowen. Sent out a $2.50 favourite that day, he had 61kgs to carry on fresh legs and was beaten only a neck on the line. He sees the Cannon Park track for the first time today and welcomes back Frank Edwards who has been on board four times previously for three wins with the four-year-old. From gate five, he maps to settle better than mid-field with cover and fitter for two runs back, he carries less weight today and looks in the mix at odds.
