Caulfield Tips 13/08/2022

BEST BET 🏆

Race 8 No.2 MR BRIGHTSIDE – ($3.40)

The feature at Caulfield is the Group 2 P.B.Lawrence Stakes (1400m) and MR BRIGHTSIDE can kick off his spring campaign with a win. The Doncaster Mile (1600m) winner from the autumn might just be a bit better than these. Slight concern that he is fresh but there was nothing wrong with his first up run in the autumn when a luckless 3rd behind Corner Pocket at Caulfield over the 1400m, going a very healthy 9.1 length faster than standard benchmark. If he runs up to that performance he should be hard to hold out here.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 1 No. 6 CHIEF ALTONY- ($2.45)

CHIEF ALTONY can get us off to a flyer in the opening event of the day. The six-year-old has been super consistent this preparation, finishing in the top three at his past five starts. He was desperately unlucky at the track and trip three starts ago and at his most recent run, the son of Rebel Raider settled back in a slowly run race at Moonee Valley before running on to land in the runner-up slot behind Lackeen. Tempo should be a bit better he with Thought Of That among a few that like to go forward in this race, while he meets a few with an advantage in fitness.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 5 No. 5 ALPHA ONE- ($3.50)

Some promising three-year-olds feature in the Vain Stakes, a race that usually produces some that go on to bigger and better things. Loved the dominant performance by ALPHA ONE at Moonee Valley over the 955m at the recent Saturday meeting at the venue. The Snowden galloper gave nothing else in that race a chance, going to the line virtually untouched to win by four lengths. The son of Super One improved six lengths on benchmark figures that day to go 10.7 lengths faster than standard and was strong to the line so I don’t see any issue with the step up to the 1200m. Damien Lane rides and will look to settle in the first couple from barrier 6.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 7 No. 11 UNCOMMON JAMES- ($2.50)

Going with the exciting Queensland galloper, UNCOMMON JAMES, in Race 7 of the afternoon at Caulfield. The four-year-old has won four straight since missing out on debut and resumed after a year off the scene with a big win at Eagle Farm over the 1200m. The son of Cable Bay then rose in grade and put a gap on his rivals in the Darby McCarthy Plate (1110m). He cruised to the line that day and looked to have more to offer, going more than seven lengths faster than standard. He might have improvement to come and the money trail in the early betting suggest that this is the case.

Best Value 💰 (EACH-WAY)

Race 2 No. 8 UNUSUAL CULTURE – ($8)

Best Value comes up in Race 2 and it is UNUSUAL CULTURE that can be an improver at his third run since coming over from New Zealand. The Maher/Eustace galloper faded late into 3rd position behind Chain Of Lightning when resuming then settled back at Caulfield over the 1400m on July 23, closing off steadily for 7th. She produced some nice late splits that day, producing the fastest last 200m and the step up to the 1600m looks right up her alley.
