Vouchers is the sort of horse Cairns can make you look clever with — sharp at the trip, drawn to land on the paint, and already proven around this tight little circuit (once). The meeting’s not stacked with exposed “track specialists” either; most of these fields are light on Cairns history, so when you do get a runner who’s handled the place, I want it onside.
We’ve got eight races on the turf and a stack of 1039m sprints that will be decided by barrier and intent as much as raw ability. Below are my Cairns racing tips for Thursday, with clear plays, a couple of “watch only” races, and one spot where I’m happy to press harder.
Cairns — the setup
Plenty of short-course racing today: four races at 1039m, two at 1367m, one at 1531m and the 2YO opener at 1039m. That tends to reward horses that can hold a spot and sprint, and it makes inside draws more valuable than they look on paper.
Limited course form across today’s fields — most runners have one or two starts here, so treat anything “1 from 1” as a note, not a lifelong romance.
One angle that does carry weight: MS L Morrison has a proper body of work at Cairns — 8 rides for 3 wins, and he’s hit the frame five times. He’s the jockey I want when the race turns into a barrier-and-balance contest.

Race 1: Ladbrokes Odds Surge Mdn Plate — 10:55, 1039m
Booming Belief is the one I want to be with early. We’re dealing with 2YOs and not much exposed form, so I’ll take the simple edge: gate 1, a light weight (123.4), and the only runner in the field with anything resembling a public “shape” to his profile (3-).
The danger is Dee Three. Scott Cooper has a strong hand in the race with two runners and if he’s brought one with any early toe, 1039m at Cairns can be over quickly — especially from barrier 3 where you can choose whether to lead or take the sit.
Play: Win bet Booming Belief. If the market makes Carlando the “stable elect” off looks alone, I’m happy to keep it simple and stay with the inside draw runner.
Race 2: Zarraffa’s Coffee Cairns Showground (Bm68) — 11:30, 1039m
The market will naturally gravitate to Singular because the form line reads like a proper BM horse (1-10724) and Wiggins is on — but the gate makes it harder than it looks. Barrier 8 at 1039m asks you to spend fuel early, and Cairns is not the place you want to be trapped three-deep chasing a hot speed.
I’d rather back the horse that can get the map: Time To Prophet from barrier 2. Georgie Holt’s runner comes through a prep with a spike (84-182), and that “2” last start reads like a horse who’s holding his form rather than searching for it. He’s also not lugging the grandstand — 128.9 is workable.
Zi Win (gate 1) is the danger on pure positioning. Even if he’s not as sharp as he once was, inside alley sprint races can turn into “first to the bend, first to the judge”.
Play: Time To Prophet each-way. Small saver win on Singular if you’re a class-first punter and you think Wiggins can negate the draw.
Race 3: Austhai Mdn Plate — 12:07, 1367m
This is the kind of maiden where you can talk yourself into six of them and still end up wrong — so I’m going to be blunt: I want She’s Got Lyrics on top because she’s the one arriving in form. That 4-5672 profile says she’s been grinding her way into the prep and finally got close last time.
Barrier 4 is perfect at 1367m — you can hold midfield with cover and launch once they fan. That’s exactly how you win these up here.
The danger is Essay Wine. He’s lightly exposed (8-3) and that “3” suggests there’s enough ability to win a Cairns maiden if he gets the right run. If the speed collapses, he’s the one who can pick them up late.
Play: She’s Got Lyrics win. If you want insurance, box She’s Got Lyrics and Essay Wine in exactas rather than spraying the trifecta.
Race 4: Tlg Haulage (Bm55) — 12:42, 1531m
Here’s the race I’m happiest to bet into. Vouchers has the profile of a horse that’s simply better than BM55 grade right now (7-5112), and he draws to get the run of the race from barrier 6. He doesn’t need to lead; he just needs clean air and a rider who pushes the button at the right time.
And yes — it matters that he’s won on his only start at Cairns. One run isn’t a trend, but it is proof he handles the circuit, and plenty of these don’t.
The danger is Looming One. Rhein Sewell’s runner has been honest (1-4284) and barrier 4 lets Aidan Holt land close enough that he won’t need luck. If the tempo is muddling, the horse on the fence/one-one can steal it.

Race 5: Kensington Park Hcp (55) — 13:17, 1039m
Does the map beat the form here? That’s the puzzle. I’m leaning to Chargin’ because he gets the golden ticket: barrier 1 in a 1039m dash. Morrison rides this track as well as anyone and, over a meaningful sample (8 rides here), he wins plenty and lands in the placings most of the time. In a race where a few of these can be “one run away” from anything, I’ll side with the rider + draw combo.
The danger is Lord Power. He’s been knocking on the door (3285-2) and gate 2 means he’ll either sit right on Chargin’s back or pressure him from outside. If Lord Power crosses cleanly, the race shape changes.
Play: Chargin’ win. If Lord Power is a clear overs in the market, I’d rather take a small saver than talk myself out of the inside draw.
Race 6: Kevin And Marg Capra Hcp (55) — 13:52, 1039m
Shere Khan is my pick because he looks like a horse who’s found the right level and is still improving. That 429-21 says he’s built into the prep, and barrier 2 at 1039m lets him be positive without burning petrol.
He’s also won on his only Cairns start. Again — one start isn’t “specialist” territory, but it’s a tick in a race where plenty are guessing.
The danger is Framed It from gate 1. He’s a consistent type (60224-) and this is the sort of race where the inside runner can make everyone else look flat-footed if they hesitate at the jump.
Play: Shere Khan win. Exacta Shere Khan/Framed It if you want to keep the bet tight and logical.
Race 7: Ladbrokes Popular Srm Hcp — 14:27, 1039m
This is the market problem race: Impardoo comes in off a monster sequence (11311-) and he’s weighted to take advantage (120.1). If he turns up anything like that form, he’s the one they have to beat.
Bodine Bailey doesn’t bring many to Cairns, but when she does, they’ve been lethal — 2 runners here for 2 winners. Small sample, sure, but it does tell you the stable places them with intent when they head to this track.
The danger is Valenki. He’s the class runner, he keeps turning up (31162-), and he gets Michael Murphy again. If this becomes a pure speed burn and the leaders overcook it, Valenki can be the one launching late.
Play: Impardoo win. If Valenki drifts to “backable” odds late, save on him rather than trying to get cute with third and fourth picks.
Race 8: Drive Queensland (Bm65) — 15:02, 1367m
I’m siding with Desert Grit</strong to finish the day because his recent form says he’s arrived. Two runs in the last 90 days for a win and a placing tells you the horse is in the zone, and the stable (Trevor & Peter Rowe) is always represented on these Far North programs.
He’s also won on his only start at Cairns, which is a handy note when a few of these are drawn awkwardly and may need the race run to suit.
The danger is Yamabushi. Wieland’s barn is the quiet “Cairns stable” on today’s numbers — five runners here historically with four placings and a win — and Yamabushi’s form is rock-solid (112-32). If he gets the right cart into the race from barrier 5, he’s the one I fear most.
Play: Desert Grit win. Quinella Desert Grit/Yamabushi for cover if you’re playing multiples.
The plays
NAP: Vouchers (Race 4, 12:42). He reads like a horse already above BM55 grade and the 1531m gives him time to use that strength. The “won on his only start here” box is a bonus, not the whole case.
Value: Time To Prophet (Race 2, 11:30) each-way. The draw and recent pattern (84-182) make him the type who can pinch a 1039m race without needing to be a superstar.
Banker for multis: Impardoo (Race 7, 14:27). That 11311- streak is the best formline on the card, and the weight lets him keep rolling.
Each-way angle: Chargin’ (Race 5, 13:17). Barrier 1 and Morrison’s Cairns record is the sort of practical edge you can actually bet into.
Course angle to keep in the notebook: F J Wieland rarely wastes a Cairns trip — from five runners here he’s landed four placings. Watch how that stable places their next couple at this circuit; it’s often a sign they’ve found the right race.
