Caulfield Racing Tips 14 March 2026 — can Xtra Rush stay on the roll?

Caulfield — the setup

Xtra Rush turns up in the first and brings the one thing every punter wants on a Saturday: a horse that’s actually in the habit of winning. He’s 4-from-5 on the formline and the question today isn’t whether he can run — it’s whether he gets the race run to suit from a gate that can force a few decisions.

It’s a compact Caulfield meeting (three races on the card we’re working with here) on turf, with a bit of everything: a staying BM84 to start, a sharp 1200m dash in the middle, then a strong 1500m VOBIS Gold closer where the map matters as much as the ratings. These Caulfield racing tips are written like you’d talk it through with a mate: who I’m backing, why I’m backing them, and where I’m happy to just watch and learn for next time.

One note up top: the live Caulfield odds feed wasn’t available for these races at the time of writing, so this is a form-and-map article rather than a price-shopping exercise.

Limited course form across today’s fields — most runners have one or two starts here, so treat Caulfield records as a reference point, not a rulebook.

Race-by-race — Caulfield predictions

Race 1: Dce (Bm84) — 12:15, 2187m

Xtra Rush (Gate 7) is the horse I want to be with, because his profile screams “keeps finding” rather than “caught up in a purple patch.” He comes here off a sequence that reads 111-13, and in the past 90 days he’s gone to the races twice for a win and a placing. That’s not padded volume — it’s simply a horse turning up and doing the job when placed to win.

The key is how Logan Bates plays it from that draw over 2187m. If Xtra Rush spends petrol early to cross, you risk turning him into a sitting shot late. If Bates can slot in with cover — even one-out, one-back — then the race becomes about who can sustain from the 600m, and that’s where a serial winner usually breaks the spirit of the “nearly” horses.

The danger is Grey Ice (Gate 6), because he’s at least shown he can run a race at Caulfield — placed on his only start here — and Jye McNeil rides this track like someone who knows where the winning lanes open. If the speed collapses and it turns into a sprint home, Grey Ice looks the type to peel at the right time and make it awkward.

Lean against Sunsets (Gate 1) as a winning play but not as a run-into-the-quaddie horse: inside draws at staying trips can be a gift, but they can also be a trap if you’re stuck behind tiring runners.

Play: Win bet Xtra Rush. If you’re playing exotics, save with Grey Ice as the late threat.

Race 2: The Murray Thoroughbreds Mystic Journey — 12:45, 1203m

Here’s the puzzle: do you want the proven Caulfield winner, or the mare with the upside that’s landed in the right stable rhythm? I’m siding with Gentle Steel (Gate 7) because he’s got momentum and a clear map: he can roll forward, sit outside speed, or stalk if something wants to burn across.

His formline (144-11) says he’s improved since being given permission to race closer, and the last 90 days are as strong as it gets — two runs, two wins. That’s the sort of confidence builder that tends to travel to town well, even when the jump in depth bites a few.

I won’t oversell the Caulfield record because it’s only one run, but it’s still worth noting: he won on his only start here. Some horses just handle the Caulfield tempo-and-turn better than others, and that one data point pushes him from “maybe” to “bet.”

The main danger is Always Enuff (Gate 6). The 518-42 profile reads like a horse that’s right on the doorstep, and Zac Spain has enough Caulfield experience to give him every chance. If Gentle Steel gets pressured early and over-races, Always Enuff is the one I can see tracking and pouncing.

She’s Got Pizzazz (Gate 4) is the watch-runner for mine. Moody/Coleman are strong at Caulfield on volume (19 runners here for 4 winners), and the gate gives her a chance to land in the first four without doing anything silly.

Play: Win bet Gentle Steel. Saver quinella with Always Enuff if you want to insure against a speed duel.

Race 3: Two Bays Farm Vobis Gold So Si Bon — 13:20, 1531m

This race is about the stable that keeps getting it right at Caulfield — and the horse that maps to get first crack. I’m with Harry’s Yacht (Gate 4). The Corstens/Larkin team don’t just “go okay” here; over 11 runners at the track they win better than one in three and hit the frame almost three-quarters of the time. That’s a proper sample, and it matters.

Harry’s Yacht brings a formline (3-1431) that suggests he’s holding his form, and the gate lets Jamie Melham ride him like the best horse: positive, but not stupid. Melham’s Caulfield strength isn’t winning every second race — it’s that he lands you in the finish. From 24 rides here he’s placed 14 times. That’s the rider you want when you’re backing a horse that should be in the first three turning for home.

The one I fear is Al Duca (Gate 7). The Freedmans win plenty at this track (22 runners for 6 winners), and his formline (11421-) screams consistency. If Al Duca gets cover and the leaders overdo it, he’s the one who can run past tired legs late.

Enxuto (Gate 5) is the other angle for multiples: he keeps turning up around the mark (424-32) and doesn’t need to be a star to pinch a placing if the favourites make even one mistake.

Play: Harry’s Yacht each-way (or straight win if you’re playing with confidence). Exacta saver with Al Duca.

Where the money goes

NAP: Gentle Steel (Race 2, 12:45). He’s coming off back-to-back wins this prep (two runs in the last 90 days, two wins) and he’s already handled Caulfield once.

Value: Grey Ice (Race 1, 12:15) as the saver. He’s placed on his only Caulfield run, and if the favourite spends fuel early, Grey Ice is the one I want stalking the move.

Banker for multis: Harry’s Yacht (Race 3, 13:20) to run top 3. The stable’s Caulfield record is the most trustworthy “repeatable” edge on the page, and the map is kind.

Each-way play: Harry’s Yacht again — he’s the right blend of stable-and-map, and you’re not relying on a perfect ride from a horror alley.

Course angle to keep: When Corstens/Larkin bring one to Caulfield, you respect it — 11 runners is enough evidence that it’s not random placement.

Next time you see a Corstens/Larkin runner land in a mid gate with Melham engaged, treat it like a decision, not a coincidence.

FAQ — Caulfield best bets & key info

What time does racing start at Caulfield today?
Racing starts at 12:15 with Race 1, the Dce (Bm84) over 2187m.

Who are the top jockeys at Caulfield on today’s numbers?
From the riders engaged on this card, the strongest Caulfield profiles by volume are Luke Cartwright (25 rides here, 6 wins and 11 placings) and Jamie Melham (24 rides, 3 wins and 14 placings). Jackson Radley also does plenty right here: 12 rides for 3 winners.

Which trainers should I follow at Caulfield today?
A & S Freedman have a deep Caulfield sample (22 runners for 6 winners). L & T Corstens & W Larkin are even sharper on strike rate here (11 runners for 4 winners, plus 8 placings), and they saddle Harry’s Yacht in the last.

What are the best bets at Caulfield today?
My best bet is Gentle Steel in Race 2 (12:45). The safest anchor is Harry’s Yacht (Race 3, 13:20) on the back of a stable that wins often at Caulfield and a jockey who places better than half the time here.

Where can I find the best Caulfield odds?
Use a multi-bookmaker odds comparison tool or check your preferred bookie close to jump time — odds weren’t available via today’s feed for these races when this preview was written, so any price edge will come from late market movement.
