This looks like a race where you’ll want to be sliding into the run, not making it from the 800.
The danger is Astern Effort (gate 7). The form 92-223 tells you he’s tough, he keeps finding the line, and he’s already placed on his only Doomben start. If the tempo turns this into a grind from the 600, he’s the one who can outstay you.
Play: Win bet Tszyuya. If you’re cautious, save on Astern Effort in exactas/quinellas rather than trying to get too clever in a maiden.
Race 2: The Gibson Hcp (C4) — 14:13, 1214m
Does the market (when it forms) overrate recent wins in this sort of Class 4, or do we just take the progressive horse and move on? I lean to the latter here: Royal Commodore (gate 5, 56.0kg) looks like the runner still climbing. The form 189-12 says he’s put it together this prep, and the weight looks right for a horse still learning how to win.
I’ve got one eye on the map too. With Braveheart drawn 1 and Code In Time drawn 2, there should be enough intent early that a horse sitting just off them gets every chance to peel and pounce.
The danger is Star Rapper (gate 6, 55.5kg). His form 3103-3 is rock-solid for this grade and he gets Jake Bayliss, who’s capable of producing one late — even if his Doomben strike-rate isn’t as sharp as the top-end riders on this card.
Play: Royal Commodore win. Small saver on Star Rapper if you want cover against a fast-run 1200 where the swooper gets the last crack.
Race 3: Sky Racing Mdn Hcp — 14:48, 1214m
This is the first real “market problem” race of the day: plenty of unknowns, a few wide gates, and a stable (Gollan) that can make a maiden look easy when the placement’s right. I want Zoustrology (gate 13, 59.0kg) because the profile screams readiness — 532- is a horse who’s been around the mark and should have the fitness and professionalism edge over the debutants and the low-experience types.
It’s not a perfect setup from that draw, so I’m banking on class and intent: Maloney taking the ride is often the tell, and Gollan’s overall Doomben record is strong enough that I don’t talk myself out of their runners when they look even remotely placed to win.
The danger is Mercatello (gate 5). He’s lightly raced (form 53), drawn to get the cheap run, and he’s already placed on his only Doomben start. If this becomes a sit-sprint and the fence is kind, he can absolutely pinch it.
Play: Zoustrology win, but keep stakes sensible given the gate. If you’re building multiples, I’d include Mercatello as insurance rather than trying to nail a skinny exacta.
Race 4: Become A Brc Member Hcp (C3) — 15:23, 1804m
Two horses, two stories, one decision. Meltdown brings the “arriving now” narrative (form 7-5011), while Silent Call brings the “never runs a bad one” angle (form 21-313). I’m siding with Meltdown (gate 7, 58.0kg) because the stable numbers at this track are too good to ignore, and his last two wins say he’s found the right pattern — settle, build, put them away.
Matthew Hoysted is sneaky-strong at Doomben too: 9 runners here for 4 wins and 8 placings. That’s a stable that targets the track, not one that just fills races. Add Jag Guthmann-Chester — who wins a third of his Doomben rides and hits the frame two-thirds of the time — and you’ve got a combination that tends to show up when it matters.
Silent Call is the clear danger. He’s drawn a touch kinder (gate 5) and that form line says he’ll be in the first couple turning for home. If they crawl and it turns into a 400m dash, he can outsprint the bigger-striding types.
Play: Meltdown win as the best bet of the meeting. Save on Silent Call if the track’s favouring on-pace runners earlier in the day.

Race 5: Sunset Soiree 20 March Mdn Plate — 15:58, 1804m
Big field, 1800m, a stack of these still learning their craft — this is where you want a horse who can either land a spot from the gate or has the engine to overcome it. Weekend Spirit (gate 6, 58.0kg) is my play. He’s already shown he can run a race here — placed on his only Doomben start — and the Jack Bruce/Ryan Maloney pairing is a sensible “win now” signal in a race where plenty will find trouble.
The danger is Come On Mr Snips (gate 15). Wide isn’t ideal, but he’s got the right form credentials (form 423) and Boris Thornton has a good Doomben record in context (7 rides here for 2 wins, 4 placings). If they roll along and the field fans, he can be the one charging over the top.
A roughie worth keeping in mind for wider exotics is Piggietales (gate 2). He’s had three runs at Doomben for one placing — not enough to call him anything, but the inside draw and light weight (56.0kg) gives him a genuine chance to improve sharply if he holds a spot.
Play: Weekend Spirit win. If you’re price-sensitive, this is an each-way shape if he’s anywhere near double figures on the day; otherwise win-only and keep your powder dry.
