Port Macquarie visitor CRANACH DREAMING (best odds currently $4.60 with Palmerbet) makes her track debut today and brings along a good-looking resume, suggesting she will make her presence felt. Last start, the Lucas Cranach mare stepped-up to BM64 company where she came from near last to grab third prize in the 1870m event at Newcastle. She ran the trip, 3 lengths slower than benchmark, the best here and set a new personal best as well. She also recorded the fastest final 800m, 600m and 400m sectionals for the race. She is well into this campaign but has found her best form of late with four podium finishes from her past five starts. The trip looks ideal for her as she comes from good stayer’s blood (with her sire finishing third in the 2011 Melbourne Cup) and with winning rider Jeff Kehoe returning for the ride, she give this a real fright today.
The Brett Cavanough-trained ROYALE RETURN (best odds currently $3.60 with Ladbrokes) has enough excuses to be forgiven for his latest performance and looks far better placed here in this contest today. Last start, the Charge Forward gelding came off an impressive win in a Class 2 at Port Macquarie when he stepped-up to city class company and faced a BM78 at Randwick. On a Heavy 10 that day, he overraced in the early stages and taking the turn via the cape, covered more ground than Bourke and Wills and was (realistically) no chance of victory that day, finishing a long second-last. Dropping sharply in grade here, he returns to the country circuit and today, gets the gun-run from gate one. He maps to settle mid-field with cover and with Mikayla Weir on board today, I think we will see a different horse here.
Armidale galloper BUFFET BUSTER (best odds currently $5.50 with Palmerbet) has won three of his past four starts and looks well placed here to add another notch to his resume today. Last start, the Snitzel gelding was coming off a hat-trick of wins when the run came to an end after he finished fourth in the Tamworth Cup Prelude (in Open company). Try as he did, he was gallant in defeat in the 14-strong field that day. Anthony Cavallo is legged aboard today for his first ride on the three-year-old who maps to settle in the first half-dozen from gate seven. With a trouble-free run here, he can give this contest a real shake today.
