ANCHOR BET ⚓

JEWEL FLIGHT  (Race 1,  No. 9 – $1.75)

The David Vandyke-trained JEWEL FLIGHT returns to the country scene again and has strong claims here that suggest she will be hard to beat in this company. Last start, the Zacinto mare was third-up when she beat all but one home in a Gold Coast Maiden over 1800m. While she ran the trip, 6.9 lengths slower than benchmark, that effort is still more than 4 lengths better than her rivals in this event. The stable have removed the blinkers for the first time for today’s contest and Jim Byrne will be having his first ride on the mare as well. Not to be confused with the third placegetter behind Manikato in the ’78 Golden Slipper, this Jewel Flight is just starting out and is our Anchor Bet for today.

NEXT BEST 🥈

JETFOIL  (Race 9,  No. 8 – $4.00)

The Helen Page-trained JETFOIL hasn’t missed a podium finish this time in and looks well placed here to keep that record intact. Last start, the Snitzel gelding was third-up when he finished third in a Class 1 Hcp over 1800m at the Sunshine Coast. It appeared the 1800m got the better of him that day after the first two across the line had his measure in the final 100m of the race. He drops back in distance today and maps to settle better than mid-field from gate four. Jim Byrne steered him to his Maiden win three starts back, and returns for today’s assignment. Even fitter for three runs back, he looks a serious winning chance in this company.

BEST VALUE 💰

DOOMANI  (Race 6,  No. 5 – $6.50  Each-Way)

Sunshine Coast galloper DOOMANI is no stranger to Ipswich and second-up today looks a solid chance at odds of taking home the chocolates. Last start, the Tavistock mare resumed from a lengthy 22-week absence and wasn’t disgraced when finishing just behind the placegetters in a BM68 Hcp over 1400m on her home track. Today’s assignment looks a little easier and from gate six, she maps to settle in the first two or three pairs. Craig Robertson sticks with her today and carrying an impressive resume into the race, she can give this a real shake.
