Mornington Racing Tips 1 Nov 2026: Ilovediamonds Again?

Overview

Ilovediamonds has won her last two starts, won her only start at Mornington, and now lines up in a 1000m BM62 for a stable that wins almost half the races it contests here. Shawn Mathrick has had nine runners at the Peninsula track for four wins and six placings, and Sam Kennedy rides. On a Sunday card built mostly on maidens and middle-grade handicaps, that is the cleanest profile on the programme.

Mornington races nine times on a track rated Good to Soft, starting with a 1600m maiden at 1:10PM and finishing with a 1200m BM66 at 5:32PM. The feature is the Peninsula Cup over 1600m, a six-horse race that is harder to split than the field size suggests. These Mornington racing tips cover every race, with a clear view where there is one and an honest pass where there isn’t. Course form among the horses is thin, so the weight shifts to recent runs and to the riders and stables who do well here, and there are a couple of those worth knowing about.

Reading the Mornington card

Only one runner on the card, Dominant Miss, has five or more starts at the track, and she hasn’t placed in any of them. Most horses here have one or two Mornington runs at most, so the useful course numbers belong to the people.

The jockey table is where the depth sits. J Mott has 40 rides here for seven wins and twenty placings, and rides Weasel Sea, Wonder Boy and Port Philip today.

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Teodore Nugent 11 3 6 27% 55%
Thomas Stockdale 21 4 11 19% 52%
J Mott 40 7 20 18% 50%
C Newitt 6 1 3 17% 50%
Patrick Moloney 11 2 5 18% 45%
Beau Mertens 25 3 10 12% 40%

Among the stables, A & S Freedman stand out with six wins and eleven placings from eighteen runners here, while Jerome Hunter has placed eight of eleven.

Trainer Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Jerome Hunter 11 3 8 27% 73%
Shawn Mathrick 9 4 6 44% 67%
A & S Freedman 18 6 11 33% 61%
Jason Warren 21 3 10 14% 48%
M Price & M Kent Jnr 24 2 11 8% 46%
C Maher 21 6 9 29% 43%
Clayton Douglas 24 6 9 25% 38%

Mornington race by race

Race 1: Peninsula Kubota Mdn Plate, 1:10PM, 1600m

Star Je Taime has gone 6th, 5th, 3rd in three starts, and that is the shape of a three-year-old learning on the job. Stepping up to 1600m with Damian Lane aboard and the light three-year-old weight of 56.5kg, she looks the one they have to beat. D T O’Brien has had six runners here for two wins and three placings, so the stable doesn’t bring them down the highway for a look.

Ambition In Bloom is the danger. She ran 4th on debut for M M Laurie and Patrick Moloney, and second-up improvement is the norm for that type. At $2.20 with Unibet, Star Je Taime is short but fair. Win bet, with Ambition In Bloom ($4.00 with Bet Right) as the saver.

Race 2: Barmah Park Restaurant & Cellar Door Mdn Plate, 1:42PM, 1200m

Who has shown the most in a race full of babies? Oceans Blue has: 3rd on debut, then 2nd last start, and she drops back into a three-year-old maiden with Damian Lane riding for D T O’Brien. Barrier 7 is fine at 1200m and she should find a spot just off the speed.

Charmingly is the C J Waller runner and ran 3rd at her only start, but gate 14 asks Beau Mertens to either burn early or drop out. Miss Home Body, 3rd last time from barrier 2, is the each-way type. No market yet. Oceans Blue to win.

Race 3: Mcleod Trees Mdn Plate, 2:15PM, 1200m

The market has Life’s Uncertainty favourite at $2.90 with Unibet without a race run, and that price is all about Jerome Hunter, who places nearly three of every four runners the stable brings here. Fair enough, but Weasel Sea has run 2nd or 3rd in all six career starts, including all three in the past three months, and he is $7.00 with Unibet.

The knock on Weasel Sea is obvious: he keeps finding one better, and barrier 14 makes it harder again. J Mott, though, hits the frame in half of all Mornington rides, and a horse this consistent at this price is a bet for the place at worst. Lonnegan ran 3rd on debut for the Laurie stable and is the other one with a form line. Weasel Sea each-way.

Race 4: Quayclean Mdn Plate, 2:50PM, 1000m

Hard to have a strong view. Royal Tea is a $2.50 favourite with Unibet on debut for Alexander Rae, and Lachlan Neindorf rides, but there is nothing on paper to test that price against.

Rockbourg is the one with a line to follow: 3rd at her only start, now back from a break with J Noonan and the inside gate for Rachael Cunningham. At $6.50 with Unibet she is the logical alternative. Sealand ($4.40 with Unibet) has two placings from her last five but finished 9th last time. Small each-way on Rockbourg, otherwise a watch race.

Race 5: Evergreen Turf (Bm62), 3:25PM, 1000m

Ilovediamonds is the best bet on the card. Her last two starts are wins, she has five runs in the past three months for two wins and three placings, and she won at her only Mornington start. Shawn Mathrick has had nine runners at the track for four winners, so the stable knows what this course asks for.

She carries 58kg, which sits well below the two topweights on 61kg, and Sam Kennedy rides from barrier 8. The 1000m suits a horse that has been winning sprints.

Invincible Lover is the danger. She ran 3rd last time, placed at her only run in the past three months, and Jamie Melham rides for Lloyd Kennewell. Catch It Kiss It also won at her only start here but was 7th last time. Ilovediamonds to win, and she is the anchor for the day.

Race 6: Sportsbet Peninsula Cup, 4:00PM, 1600m

Six runners and no standout. That makes it a race about who gets the run, and Lim’s Saltoro looks the one most likely to be there at the finish.

The D Meagher seven-year-old has run 3rd, 9th, 3rd and 3rd in his four starts over the past three months: three placings without the win. He carries topweight of 60kg, which is the worry, but in a six-horse field the race shape should help. C Newitt rides from barrier 3 and has had six rides here for a win and three placings.

Wonder Boy is the complicated one. He won at his only Mornington start and J Mott rides for Jerome Hunter, a combination that reads well on today’s numbers. But his last two runs were well beaten, and a horse that drops off that sharply needs a reason to bounce back. If he does, he wins. If he doesn’t, he fades out of it.

Reset The Jazz is the light-weight each-way play. On 54kg with Jye Mcneil, he placed in two of three runs this time in and ran 3rd at his only start here. Aztec Ruler has two placings from five recent starts for Laurie and Moloney, and is the last of the possibles.

No market up yet. Lim’s Saltoro to win, with a small saver on Wonder Boy.

Race 7: Catanach’s Jewellers (Bm62), 4:30PM, 2400m

Jonquil keeps putting her hand up. Five runs in the past three months have produced a win and four placings, and she was 2nd last start. She drops to 56kg, the lightest weight in the field, over a staying trip where every kilo counts, with Dylan Dunn riding for Brett Scott.

Churchill Lane is the danger as a last-start winner, and Jason Warren‘s stable has placed nearly half its Mornington runners. Power Pivot has run 2nd in two of his last three and is the each-way roughie. Mickio also won last time but shoulders 61kg. Jonquil each-way, with Churchill Lane in the exotics.

Race 8: Louvretec Melbourne (Bm66), 5:00PM, 2000m

Two last-start winners meet here. Octane Reign won two of his four runs in the last three months and has barrier 2. Sixty Grand also won last time and has the local stable of M Price & M Kent Jnr behind him, but he jumps from gate 10.

The draw tips it. Dylan Dunn can take Octane Reign straight to a spot behind the speed, and Jason Warren has him in good order. Foix, a course winner for C Maher, is the one coming from behind if the pace is on, and C Maher has six wins from twenty-one runners here. Octane Reign to win.

Race 9: Progress Signs (Bm66), 5:32PM, 1200m

Artistic Genius won last time and has won two of four starts in the past three months, placing in three. He carries 61.5kg, the most in the race, but he is going well enough to deal with it, and P Koumis has had three runners here for a win and two placings.

Unriddle is the danger. He won at one of his two Mornington starts and placed in both, and Melea Castle rides for Rory Hunter. Ektifire comes in on 55kg for the A & S Freedman stable, which wins a third of its races here. Artistic Genius to win, Ektifire for the trifecta.

Where the money goes

NAP: Ilovediamonds (Race 5, 3:25PM). Two wins in a row, a course win already, and a trainer with four winners from nine Mornington runners. Nothing else on the card ticks all three boxes.

Value: Weasel Sea (Race 3, 2:15PM), $7.00 with Unibet. Placed in all six starts. He might find another one too good, but the price covers that.

Banker: Star Je Taime (Race 1, 1:10PM), $2.20 with Unibet. Improving with every run and the step up in trip suits her. Use her to start the multi.

Each-way: Jonquil (Race 7, 4:30PM). A win and four placings from five recent runs, and the lightest weight in a 2400m race.

Course angle: J Mott at Mornington. Forty rides, seven wins, twenty placings. When Mott gets on a horse that already runs consistently, like Weasel Sea, the place bet becomes close to a formality.

If Shawn Mathrick keeps bringing horses here at four wins from nine, the stable’s runners will be the first thing to check at every Mornington meeting.
