Overview
Weekend Artist has won two of its three visits to the Sunshine Coast and two of its last four starts anywhere, and it gets in near the bottom of the weights in Friday night’s feature Bm65.
That is the horse I keep coming back to on an eight-race twilight card that runs from 5:30PM to 9:06PM on a track rated Good to Soft. It is not a one-horse meeting, though. Jack Bruce and Ben Thompson have turned this track into their own backyard, Snitzstream brings a perfect placing record here into a C2 thinned by late scratchings, and the late maiden has a couple of horses that keep knocking on the door. These Sunshine Coast racing tips walk through every race with a clear selection, a named danger and a staking line, then finish with the five bets that matter. Late scratchings have trimmed several fields, leaving between nine and 15 runners in every race from Race 2 onwards, so a few each-way angles open up where the win betting looks crowded. Bookmaker markets have not opened yet, so everything below is argued on form, course record and race shape rather than price.
Sunshine Coast: the setup tonight
Good to Soft on the Sunshine Coast turf usually rewards horses that have already handled the surface, and tonight a handful of runners bring real track evidence. Most of the rest have one or two starts here at best, so treat their course numbers as notes rather than trends.
| Horse | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Makamae | 10 | 2 | 7 | 20.0 | 70.0 |
| Royal Gladiator | 7 | 1 | 5 | 14.3 | 71.4 |
| Family Of League | 7 | 1 | 4 | 14.3 | 57.1 |
| Fifty Calibre | 6 | 2 | 2 | 33.3 | 33.3 |
| Bit Of Grunt | 5 | 1 | 4 | 20.0 | 80.0 |
| Snitzstream | 4 | 1 | 4 | 25.0 | 100.0 |
| Weekend Artist | 3 | 2 | 2 | 66.7 | 66.7 |
| Fiery Lass | 3 | 2 | 3 | 66.7 | 100.0 |
| Half Moon Roo | 3 | 1 | 2 | 33.3 | 66.7 |
The flip side matters too. I Miss Margie is winless from nine runs here and Exobrazen is winless from eight, which is enough evidence to leave both out.
The jockey picture is dominated by one name. Ben Thompson has ridden 39 winners from 157 rides at this track and rides in seven of the eight races tonight.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryan Houston | 6 | 1 | 4 | 16.7 | 66.7 |
| Maddie Mankelow | 7 | 2 | 4 | 28.6 | 57.1 |
| Ben Thompson | 157 | 39 | 87 | 24.8 | 55.4 |
| M Rodd | 88 | 21 | 47 | 23.9 | 53.4 |
| D Moor | 78 | 10 | 40 | 12.8 | 51.3 |
| S Cormack | 8 | 2 | 4 | 25.0 | 50.0 |
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jack Bruce | 106 | 25 | 64 | 23.6 | 60.4 |
| Renita Beaton | 32 | 9 | 19 | 28.1 | 59.4 |
| Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald | 35 | 3 | 19 | 8.6 | 54.3 |
| T J Gollan | 57 | 10 | 29 | 17.5 | 50.9 |
| Chris & Corey Munce | 62 | 6 | 31 | 9.7 | 50.0 |
| J W Healy | 65 | 14 | 30 | 21.5 | 46.2 |
Bruce has five runners left on the card and places six of every ten horses he brings here, across more than a hundred starters. When Thompson rides for him at this track the pair have six wins and 16 placings from 24 rides, the most recent winner coming only a week ago. That combination is the thread running through tonight’s meeting.

Sunshine Coast racing tips, race by race
Race 1: Vantage Building Group Hcp (C4), 5:30PM, 1000m
Shako gets the nod to open the night. Top weight is no small burden, but Shako arrives off back-to-back thirds and one of those came at this track on 2 October with Ben Thompson aboard for Jack Bruce, so the same team is simply running it back. The recent form line is all minor placings without a win, which suggests the handicapper has not overreacted.
The danger is Crown Guinea. The racecard shows a win at its most recent start, yet Crown Guinea has not raced in the past three months and is winless from four tries here, with two placings. Fresh horses can go either way in a short sprint. Lunar Eight drops in light from barrier 2 and is the roughie I would include in exotics.
Small win bet on Shako, with Crown Guinea and Lunar Eight underneath in trifectas.
Race 2: Amerro Engineering Hcp (C1), 6:00PM, 1000m
Who do you trust when nearly every serious contender is coming off a break? Problematical, Desanto and Urban Lad have all had no start in the past 90 days, and scratchings have cut this to ten.
I lean to Problematical. It won one of its two Sunshine Coast starts and placed in the other, draws barrier 3, and S Cormack has won two of eight rides here. Desanto is the obvious threat with the Thompson and Bruce team behind it, and its last three runs before the break read 2, 1, 9, which shows a win is there on its day.
Hard race to have a strong view on. Small win on Problematical, saver on Desanto.
Race 3: Oceanside Orthopaedics Hcp (58), 6:30PM, 1200m
Groening is the three-year-old on the up. One win from three starts in the past 90 days, a form line that closes with a win, and one of the lighter weights from barrier 6. David Vandyke has nine winners from 49 runners at this track, and R Wiggins has placed on nine of 20 rides here. A young horse on a rising curve, getting weight from older handicappers, is exactly the type I want at this level.
Hawaiian Bloom is the one to beat if Groening needs the run. Barrier 1, a light weight, and three top-three finishes (one a win) from four recent starts, and Maddie Mankelow has been productive at the track in limited opportunities. Icymiss has placed in three of the last four and in both visits to this track, so belongs in every exotic, but has drawn wide in barrier 14. Half Moon Roo deserves respect after a win and two placings from three runs here, though barrier 18 is a big ask.
Win bet on Groening. Box Groening with Hawaiian Bloom and Icymiss in the quinella.
Race 4: Auto Masters Baringa & Beerwah Mdn Hcp, 7:00PM, 1000m
Two maidens with very different profiles. Tszinsi has run second at both starts in the past 90 days, collecting $10,600 along the way, and gets in with one of the lighter weights from barrier 3. Wild Lass has placed in two of three starts here and also ran second last time, but trainer T N Miller has no winners from 47 runners at this track.
That stable record tips it for me. Tszinsi is the most reliable horse in the race and Archie McColm will get every chance to sit just off the pace from a low draw. Bar Star is the unknown: one start, one second, and Ryan Maloney rides from barrier 1. If Bar Star has improved from that debut, that is the runner most likely to spoil the maiden breakthrough.
Win and place on Tszinsi. Bar Star and Wild Lass round out the trifecta.
Race 5: Airmaster Sunshine Coast (Bm65), 7:30PM, 1200m
Royal Gladiator never runs a bad race here. Five top-three finishes from seven Sunshine Coast starts is proper course form, and Royal Gladiator has placed in all four runs over the past 90 days. The catch is obvious: no win in that stretch, and only one win at the track. The most reliable horse in the race, then, but not necessarily the winner.
Limero is the danger I respect most. A placing from four starts here is not much, but the racecard figures show a second last start and the Kendrick stable has three placings from six runners at this track. Miss Funny Honey with MS S Tierney is the other one to cover.
Each-way on Royal Gladiator, the cleanest place bet on the card.
Race 6: Diageo Australia (Bm65), 8:00PM, 1800m
This is the feature of the night. Scratchings have taken out four, including Draw Attention, leaving 11 runners and still plenty of course form. I think Weekend Artist is the best of them.
Start with the numbers that matter. Weekend Artist has won twice from three starts at this track, and over the past 90 days has won twice from four runs, finishing in the first three on three of those, for $34,850 in prizemoney. That is the strongest recent record of any horse in the field. The racecard form shows a third last start, which reads as a fair effort rather than a decline, and the Munce stable places with half its runners here. Archie McColm keeps the weight down, so Weekend Artist meets the topweights on good terms, and barrier 6 should land it in a handy spot without having to work early.
With Draw Attention out, Kowloon Magnate becomes the main danger and the consistency story: five starts in the past 90 days and a placing in every one, for Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald with Ryan Houston, who has placed on four of his six rides here. Drawn in barrier 2, Kowloon Magnate should get the run of the race, and a horse that keeps finishing in the first three only needs one more length to turn into a winner. Then there is Makamae, the course specialist. Seven top-three finishes from ten runs here is a 70% strike rate for the frame, and you cannot leave that out of trifectas even after a recent eighth.
Fiery Lass is the light-weighted wildcard. Two wins from three runs here, placed in all three, and Renita Beaton wins with more than a quarter of her runners at the track. If the pace is strong it could finish over the top of everything.
Main bet: Weekend Artist to win. Saver on Kowloon Magnate, and a trifecta with Weekend Artist and Kowloon Magnate on top over Makamae and Fiery Lass.
Race 7: Xxxx Hcp (C2), 8:30PM, 1400m
Scratchings have gutted this race. Divine Justice, Kobability and Kozak Prince are all out, which takes away three of the most in-form horses and leaves a field of 12 built around two consistent types.
Snitzstream is the one I want. Four starts at the Sunshine Coast have produced four top-three finishes, including a win, and over the past 90 days the record reads two wins from five runs with $39,260 in prizemoney. The latest run was a sixth, which keeps the price of entry honest, but the track record says this is where Snitzstream shows its best. Barrier 9 is a sensible draw from which to settle midfield and build a run.
Till Dusk is the clear danger. The racecard form ends with a win, it placed in both visits here, and it carries one of the lighter weights for the Munce stable. Tam Na Ghar is the Thompson and Bruce runner and also won its most recent start, so it goes into the exotics. Bit Of Grunt, with four top-three finishes from five runs here, is the each-way roughie.
Win and place on Snitzstream. Quinella with Till Dusk, and Tam Na Ghar and Bit Of Grunt in the trifecta.
Race 8: Ray White Commercial Northern Corridor Sunshine Coast Mdn Hcp, 9:06PM, 1600m
Akira San has been close enough to win one of these. Placed in both starts here and in two of three runs over the past 90 days, and the last outing was a third. G Geran has had only ten rides at the track, but the horse’s consistency does the heavy lifting.
Poor Ol’ Johny Ray is the danger. Three straight thirds on the racecard tell you this one will be in the finish again, and M Rodd has won 21 races here. There has been no run in 90 days, though, and that tips me to the fitter horse. Spirit Of Torque, a three-year-old for the Kendrick stable with Thompson on board, is the improver to include.
Win bet on Akira San, with Poor Ol’ Johny Ray in the quinella.

Where the money goes
NAP: Weekend Artist (Race 6, 8:00PM). No horse in the feature has a stronger recent record, and a horse with two Sunshine Coast wins carrying a light weight is the bet I would make if I could only make one.
Value: Groening (Race 3, 6:30PM). A lightly raced three-year-old with a win in its last start meets exposed older handicappers on a light weight. Horses still on the way up tend to be underestimated at this level, and that is where the generosity should come from once the market forms.
Banker: Snitzstream (Race 7, 8:30PM). Four visits to this track, four top-three finishes, and the race lost three of its best winners to scratchings. The most solid leg for any multi.
Each-way: Royal Gladiator (Race 5, 7:30PM). Placed in all four recent runs and five times from seven here. Winning is the question; filling a place rarely is.
Course angle: Jack Bruce and Ben Thompson. Six winners and 16 placings from 24 rides together at the Sunshine Coast, with Shako and Desanto their best chances early and Tam Na Ghar later in the night.
If Bruce keeps placing six in ten of his runners here, the Thompson bookings will be the first thing to check on every Sunshine Coast card before Christmas.
