Overview
Metalcraft has won three on end and is unbeaten in two Rockhampton starts, and nothing in Race 3 has the same momentum. Alisha Taylor’s in-form galloper carries just 119kg with C McIver aboard, and that combination is the reason to get the form guide out early on a Tuesday in Central Queensland.
The rest of the card has plenty of shape to it. Seven races on the turf, rated Good to Soft, starting at 1:45PM with a 1312m handicap and finishing with a Benchmark 68 over 1422m at 5:26PM. These Rockhampton racing tips work through every race, flag the stables that travel well to this track, and finish with where the money actually goes. Expect a short-priced maiden banker in Race 2, a couple of in-form handicappers chasing hat-tricks, and one trainer whose strike rate here is hard to ignore.
Reading the Rockhampton card
There is real course form on this card, which is not always the case midweek. Eighteen of today’s runners have three or more starts at Rockhampton, and the jockey and trainer samples are deep enough to lean on.

Jockeys (five or more rides here, by place rate)
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |

| R Wiggins | 68 | 9 | 33 | 13% | 49% |
| W G Satherley | 106 | 18 | 47 | 17% | 44% |

Trainers (by place rate)
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| G K Taylor | 26 | 11 | 16 | 42% | 62% |
| Krystle Arnold | 15 | 1 | 8 | 7% | 53% |
| Alisha Taylor | 30 | 8 | 15 | 27% | 50% |
| J E Mcconachy | 47 | 6 | 22 | 13% | 47% |
| L F Birchley | 13 | 4 | 6 | 31% | 46% |
| Ricky Vale | 70 | 8 | 29 | 11% | 41% |
| Jason Morgan | 29 | 6 | 12 | 21% | 41% |
Two things jump out. G K Taylor wins 11 of his 26 starters at this track, which is a ridiculous number for a sample that size, and he has four runners today. W G Satherley is the busiest rider on the card by a distance, with 18 winners from 106 rides here and a place in the frame close to half the time. Luxor Prince is the warning sign: fifteen Rockhampton starts, seven placings, no wins.

Rockhampton race by race
Race 1: Tab Hcp, 1:45PM, 1312m
The Barber is the one to beat and the market knows it. He won his only Rockhampton start, his recent figures read 1-2-1, and he goes for Alisha Taylor, who wins with better than a quarter of her runners here. R Wiggins rides, and he hits the frame with close to half his Callaghan Park mounts. At $2.20 with Unibet you are not getting rich, and 132.2kg is a proper impost, but he is the class runner.
The problem for anyone wanting to take him on is that the obvious alternatives have their own questions. Barbarian King has placed in all four starts here, including one win, and gets in with 123.4kg, so he is the each-way type at $4.80 with Bet Right. Fancy Geeone won last start and has a course win from two visits.
The one the price ignores is Jungle Rhythm. Two starts at Rockhampton, two wins, and he won his most recent run as well. At $13.00 with Bet Right, that is too big for a horse who keeps turning up at this track. Back The Barber to win, and have a small each-way ticket on Jungle Rhythm.
Race 2: Great Northern Mdn Plate, 2:25PM, 1531m
Can anything stop Pulsating breaking through? The horse has placed in all three Rockhampton starts and in all three runs in the last 90 days, with recent form of 2-2-3-2. At 120.1kg it carries one of the lighter weights, Nikki Olzard rides, and J E Mcconachy places almost half his runners here. The knock is obvious: it keeps finding one better. At $1.40 with Bet Right there is no value in the win, but for multis she is as safe as anything on the card.
Wave Dancer, at $7.50 with Unibet, has the most recent form of the rest, finishing second two starts back. Patienceofasaint ($5.25, Bet Right) is scratched from Race 1 to run here, but has not placed in three Rockhampton visits. Banker for the multi, no straight win bet at the price.
Race 3: Racing Work Safety Month Hcp, 3:05PM, 1203m
Metalcraft is the best bet on the card. Three straight wins, all inside the last 90 days, and both previous Rockhampton starts ended in a win. That run has been worth $34,800 in prize money, which tells you the opposition has not been soft. Alisha Taylor’s runners win better than a quarter of the time here, and 119kg is light for a horse in this form. C McIver’s place rate here is the lowest of the regular riders, the only small mark against the booking, but the horse is doing the work.
Thee Creek is the danger. With 114.6kg, the lightest weight in the field, it has won two of its last four, and has finished in the first three twice from four course runs, once as the winner. If the pace is soft and Amy Graham gets a cheap lead, this could turn into hard work.
Bold Comic runs for G K Taylor and won here before, but the top weight Aztec State is first up off a long break. No prices were up at the time of writing. Win bet on Metalcraft, and include Thee Creek in exactas.
Race 4: Melbourne Cup At Callaghan Park Plate (C3), 3:40PM, 1312m
Two horses chasing hat-tricks in one Class 3, and only one of them has the weight to worry about. The Defender has won his last three, banking $37,000 in the process, and steps out for J E Mcconachy with C McIver aboard. He carries 132.2kg, joint top weight with Yes Larry, and that is the question he has to answer.
Yes Larry has placed in all three of his last 90 days of starts without winning, so he looks the type who fills the minor money again. Ellibaby, with Satherley in the saddle, has three top-three finishes from four recent runs, one a win, and gets 127.8kg, which is the real threat to The Defender. Luxor Prince turns up again with seven Rockhampton placings and no wins, which tells you where he is likely to finish.
The Defender to win, with a saver on Ellibaby.
Race 5: Garrards Hcp (55), 4:15PM, 1750m
The longest race of the day, and a moderate one. Panda Drum is the horse in form: two wins from five starts in the last 90 days, with recent figures of 3-1-3-6-1-5. Ashley Butler rides from barrier 1, which helps over 1750m, and 127.8kg is fair. He is the pick.
General Wolffe is the reverse profile. Nine Rockhampton starts, five placings, never won here. He will probably be running on late again. Sneaky Peaky won one of his last five. Satherley’s booking on Mr Grey catches the eye, but none of its three Rockhampton starts produced a placing. Win bet on Panda Drum, and General Wolffe for the places only.
Race 6: Kennas Chartered Accountants (Bm55), 4:50PM, 1203m
Villandry carries 138.8kg, which is a lot of weight for a sprint, but has placed in all three Rockhampton starts. That makes him the danger rather than the pick. The horse I want is Sujeed. He has nine starts here for four top-three finishes, one of them a win, won one of his three runs in the last 90 days, and gets Satherley, the busiest and best-performed rider on the card.
Craiglea Merida has form of 1-2-8-1-2-4 and placed on its only course start, so it is next in line. Rickythesteamboat runs for G K Taylor, but his recent form is moderate and he has not placed in two recent runs. Sujeed each-way, as the field is tight.
Race 7: Airtech Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning (Bm68), 5:26PM, 1422m
Zedari or King’s Duty? Zedari has won both starts in the last 90 days, including his only Rockhampton run, and goes for the Mcconachy and Olzard combination that also has Pulsating earlier. He is the obvious form horse at 126.7kg.
King’s Duty has the course record. Two wins from five starts at Rockhampton, Satherley again, and 128.9kg from barrier 1. Bold Artic is G K Taylor’s last runner of the day and has a course win from three starts, and Humble Hero has won two of his last three.
If the speed comes from Thebarberofseville or Outwitted, both course winners, that suits a horse able to sit just off them. Zedari has drawn wider in barrier 10, so Olzard will need to find cover early, while King’s Duty can take the economical run from the inside. This is the most open race on the card. Zedari to win, King’s Duty each-way as the saver.

Where the money goes
NAP: Metalcraft (Race 3, 3:05PM). Three wins on the bounce, unbeaten at the track, and still only 119kg. The weight and the form both point the same way.
Value: Jungle Rhythm (Race 1, 1:45PM). Two from two at Rockhampton and a winner last start, yet $13.00 with Bet Right. That price does not respect the record.
Banker: Pulsating (Race 2, 2:25PM). Placed in every Rockhampton start and every run of the last 90 days. This is the leg to lean on in a multi, not a stand-alone bet at $1.40.
Each-way: Barbarian King (Race 1, 1:45PM). In the first three at all four Rockhampton starts and both runs of the last 90 days, with only 123.4kg. At $4.80 with Bet Right, the place return does the work.
Course angle: G K Taylor. Eleven winners from 26 starters here. He runs He’s A Fighter, Bold Comic, Rickythesteamboat and Bold Artic today, and any of them is worth a second look.
If G K Taylor keeps that strike rate up over another dozen starters, he will be the first name to check every time Rockhampton races.
