Overview
News Bound has won three of its last five starts, including the last two, and it carries that form into the Warren Shire Cotton Cup as the horse everyone else on this card has to beat.
It is a seven-race country meeting on Sunday, opening at 1:45PM and wrapping up at 5:15PM, with the track rated Good to Soft. These Warren racing tips work through every race, finish with a set of plays, and flag which stables actually win here. Only the first three races had bookmaker markets open when this was written, so the back half of the card leans on form, course records and connections. One stable deserves your attention before anything else: MS J Clement has four winners and eight placegetters from 14 Warren runners, and sends five horses today, every one of them ridden by Gabrielle Johnston. A handful of runners are already scratched: Enchaanted (Race 1), Moon Dart (Race 2), Tropic (Race 3), Iconic Revolver (Race 4), Bushwalker (Race 5) and Commando Jack (Race 7).
What Warren gives us today
Good to Soft at Warren, with three races at 1312m, two at 1531m, a 1094m sprint to open and the Cotton Cup over 1750m. Limited course form across today’s fields: no runner has more than two starts here, so the horse records only tell you who has handled the track, not who owns it. Castlebar Road, Marinera and Dodge The Dark each won on their only Warren start, and Demarcate has won one of two.
The riders and stables are where the volume is. Jacob Stiff has more Warren winners than anyone riding today, and Anna Weatherlake has placed on six of eight rides here.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anna Weatherlake | 8 | 3 | 6 | 37.5 | 75.0 |
| Izzy Neale | 21 | 2 | 10 | 9.5 | 47.6 |
| Jacob Stiff | 24 | 4 | 10 | 16.7 | 41.7 |
| Zoe Hunt | 18 | 1 | 7 | 5.6 | 38.9 |
| Kody Nestor | 15 | 0 | 5 | 0.0 | 33.3 |
| Clayton Gallagher | 24 | 3 | 7 | 12.5 | 29.2 |
| Gabrielle Johnston | 11 | 1 | 3 | 9.1 | 27.3 |
| J Pracey-Holmes | 19 | 2 | 4 | 10.5 | 21.1 |
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| R P Northam | 7 | 2 | 5 | 28.6 | 71.4 |
| M R Mulholland | 6 | 2 | 4 | 33.3 | 66.7 |
| MS J Clement | 14 | 4 | 8 | 28.6 | 57.1 |
| MS S Jeffries | 12 | 1 | 6 | 8.3 | 50.0 |
| C Lundholm | 14 | 0 | 5 | 0.0 | 35.7 |
| Brett Robb | 20 | 3 | 6 | 15.0 | 30.0 |
| Brett Thompson | 25 | 2 | 5 | 8.0 | 20.0 |
| Connie Greig | 14 | 1 | 2 | 7.1 | 14.3 |
Clement’s record stands out because of the volume behind it. Johnston and Clement together are a different story at this track, one win from seven, so the edge sits with the stable’s placements rather than the pairing itself.

Warren race-by-race tips
Race 1: Elders (Bm58), 1:45PM, 1094m
Wellspring is the one. It has run three times in the last 90 days for a win and two placings, and its last three starts read third, first, second. It also ran second on its only visit to Warren, so the track holds no mystery. Jacob Stiff takes the ride for MS S Jeffries from barrier 7, and Stiff has four winners here from 24 rides.
Miss Capricorn heads the market at $3.40 with Unibet and has a similar profile: second last start after a win and a third before that. That is the danger. Denman Force at $3.60 has placed in four of five runs this prep without winning, which makes it a trifecta horse more than a win bet.
At $4.00 with Bet Right, Wellspring is the better win price of the top three. Win bet.
Race 2: Nutrien Ag Solutions Country Boosted Mdn Plate, 2:20PM, 1312m
Who wants to win a maiden? Not many of these, on the evidence. Nightwalker is a seven-year-old still looking for a first win and has finished third, sixth and third at its last three. Cosmic Rosa is the $4.00 favourite with Unibet off a single run this prep, a fourth.
Argyle Springs offers the most solid line: placed in three of six runs in the last 90 days and second last start. J Pracey-Holmes rides from barrier 4. At $6.00 with Bet Right, it is the each-way play. Nightwalker, with Clayton Gallagher aboard, is the one most likely to beat it. Small each-way on Argyle Springs, otherwise a watch race.
Race 3: Ag Flow Solutions (Bm82), 2:55PM, 1312m
The market has Fetes des Meres a $3.00 favourite with Bet Right, but it has one placing from six runs in the last 90 days and no wins. That price is built on a second and a fourth at its last two, which is not much to lean on in a Benchmark 82.
Castlebar Road makes more sense. The ten-year-old won its only start at Warren, has a win and three placings from five runs this prep, and was second last time out. Johnston rides for Clement from barrier 6. At $5.75 with Bet Right, it is the best value on the card.
Zampano at $4.80 placed twice in four runs this prep but ran ninth last start. Glowing Rapids ($11.00) ran third on its only Warren start and is the roughie worth including in exotics. Anna Weatherlake on Lockdown Gamble ($13.00 with Unibet) is worth noting given that strike rate here. Win bet on Castlebar Road.
Race 4: Harry ‘Mab’ Fuller Memorial Super Mdn Hcp, 3:30PM, 1531m
Texan Star has placed in all three of its runs in the last 90 days, including two seconds at its last two starts. In a maiden handicap where most of the field has a string of beaten runs, that consistency counts. K Dunbar rides for MS S Jeffries from barrier 11, the only worry being a wide gate in a big field.
Grey Belief is the main threat. It has placed in three of seven runs this prep and was second last start, so the form lines meet head on. Miss Maverick has the best placing rate of the lot, four of six, but finished tenth or worse last start. Mega Missile, a lightly raced three-year-old with a second and a fourth from two starts, could improve past all of them.
No market was open at the time of writing. Win bet on Texan Star, saver on Grey Belief.
Race 5: Warren Services Club Hcp (C2), 4:05PM, 1312m
M R Mulholland has only brought six runners to Warren, but two won and four placed, and Vicious Rumour arrives off a win at its only run in the last 90 days. Its last three starts read third, ninth, first. Stiff rides from barrier 8.
Spring Prospect also won last start, after a sixth, and gets in light enough to be dangerous. Marinera won on its only Warren visit and has placed in three of five runs this prep, finishing second at each of its last two. Gallagher and Brett Robb have yet to place together at this track from seven attempts, though, which tempers enthusiasm. Demarcate, a Warren winner from two starts, keeps running into the placings without winning.
Vicious Rumour to win. Marinera and Spring Prospect with it in the quinella.
Race 6: Warren Shire Cotton Cup, 4:40PM, 1750m
Three wins from five starts in the last 90 days, including the last two: News Bound brings the best current form on the whole card into the feature. Zoe Hunt, with seven placings from 18 Warren rides, gets the six-year-old from barrier 5 for Natalie Pearce.
The question is whether the step to 1750m in a Cup field finds it out, and the form says it is on an upward curve rather than topping out. Talkachino is the danger. It won three starts ago and has run third at both starts since, and Stiff rides for Mulholland, a stable that has already shown it travels well to this track. Talakai won last start for Robb and comes with a win and two placings from three runs.
Micro Mikki carries top weight and has three placings from five runs this prep without a win, which says it will be there or thereabouts without breaking through. Marnoo placed in both its runs this campaign.
No prices were up at the time of writing. News Bound to win, Talkachino as the saver.
Race 7: Aff Australian Food And Fibre Country Boosted (Bm58), 5:15PM, 1531m
Two horses with the best current form meet here, and both have to overcome a wide draw. Aoife has won its last two starts and placed in four of five runs this prep; it jumps from barrier 12 for Kylie Kennedy with H Van Der Hoven aboard. Noble One won three of six runs in the last 90 days but ran seventh last start and comes out of barrier 14. That flat last run tips it towards Aoife.
Dodge The Dark is the each-way angle. It won its only start at Warren, ran second last start, and Wendy Peel both trains and rides it, with three placings from four rides here. Moon Zone has placed in four of five runs this campaign but draws 16. Take The Chance finished third at each of its last two starts and is the place filler.
Aoife to win, Dodge The Dark each-way.

Where the money goes
NAP: News Bound (Race 6, 4:40PM). Two straight wins and three from its last five; no horse on this card is in better order, and the Cup trip is the only question.
Value: Castlebar Road (Race 3, 2:55PM). $5.75 with Bet Right for a Warren winner from a stable with four winners here, while the favourite has one placing from six.
Banker: Wellspring (Race 1, 1:45PM). Placed every time this preparation and ran second here; the safest leg to start a multi.
Each-way: Dodge The Dark (Race 7, 5:15PM). Course winner, second last start, and a trainer-rider who keeps hitting the frame at Warren.
Course angle: R P Northam. Five placings from seven Warren runners, with Great Point, Star Whisperer and Jacenza on today’s card. Jacenza gets Anna Weatherlake, who has the best strike rate of any rider here.
If Northam keeps placing runners at this clip, that stable will be the first thing to look for on every Warren card from here.
