All Aged Stakes History
The Open weight-for-age race takes place one week after Day 2 of The Championships is held at Royal Randwick and is one of two Group 1 features on the day with the other being the Champagne Stakes (1600m) for two-year-olds.
Maid Of The Lake won the inaugural All Aged Stakes in 1865 when the race was run at its original distance of 1 mile (1600m).
The race was changed to its current distance of 1400m in 2004 as Private Steer saluted for trainer John O’Shea, and it continues to attract the country’s best sprinters and milers.
Only six runners faced the starter in 2001 when champion mare Sunline was beaten as the $1.30 favourite. She won the race on either side of that attempt.
Another mare scared away her opposition in 2012 as Atlantic Jewel, a winner at 10 of her 11 career starts, saluted as the $1.10 favourite.
The Doncaster Mile (1600m) held at the same track two weeks earlier has been a reliable guide to the All Aged Stakes but in recent times TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) runners have also gone on to win the race as both races are now key form references heading into the event.
Some of Australia’s greatest horses have won the All Aged Stakes with the most notable in recent times being champion mares Sunline in 2000 & 2002 and Atlantic Jewel in 2012.
Other notable winners of the All Aged Stakes include Carbine (1889-90), Wakeful (1902), Desert Gold (1918), Amounis (1930), Chatham (1934), Peter Pan (1935), Ajax (1938-40), Bernborough (1946), Tulloch (1958), Lord (1959), Noholme (1960), Sky High (1961), Tobin Bronze (1967), Emancipation (1984), Shaftesbury Avenue (1991), Rough Habit (1992-93), Sunline (2000 & 2002), Hot Danish (2010), All Too Hard (2013), Dissident (2015) and Trapeze Artist (2018).
