2021 Surround Stakes Horses
1 MONTEFILIA $11
The David Payne-trained galloper resumes after running 3rd in the VRC Oaks (2500m) in the spring and may need the run but wasn’t far away from them in the Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) earlier on at her last preparation before taking out the Flight Stakes (1600m). With a solid tempo or better, she can run on into the top three.
2. AWAY GAME $9
The consistent filly has placed 3rd at her past two and missed out behind Aim in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) before chasing well behind Every Rose in the Light Fingers Stakes (1200m). 10 of this year’s field come out of that lead up and on that run, she is right in contention.
3. DAME GISELLE $4.80
Dame Giselle comes out of the Inglis 3YO Sprint and was behind Rocketing By that day. She went seven lengths faster than standard in that race and at her second run last time she took out the Furious Stakes before knocking over a number of these when winning the Tea Rose Stakes at the track and trip. She looks well suited and is a clear top three prospect.
4. EVERY ROSE $18
Led all the way to take out the Light Fingers Stakes but the question mark is the step up to the 1400m from the wide gate. Might not get the race on her terms this time around.
5. HUNGRY HEART $11
Was caught wide in the Light Fingers Stakes before running 7th, beaten two lengths. Finished runner-up in every leg of the Triple Crown last spring and while she has drawn wide, she might be a fraction over the odds at the $11. A top three contender.
6. FORBIDDEN LOVE $13
The Richard and Michael Freedman-trained galloper missed out in the Magic Millions and heads into this with six weeks in between runs. Took out the Reginald Allen Quality (1400m) at Randwick in the spring and went six lengths faster than standard that day before running 3rd in the Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington. Is in the mix from barrier 3.
7. NEVER TALK $8
The daughter of No Nay Never was luckless in the Light Fingers and produced the best last 400m of that race. She might have a but more upside in comparison to some of these and with better luck in running she can go very close at the $8.
8. VANGELIC $19
Appeared to have every chance when resuming with an 8th in the Light Fingers Stakes. Placed in the Tea Rose and the Flight last spring and can land in the top five with the right run.
9. LA MEXICANA $6.50
The Anthony Freedman filly heads up from Melbourne and the stable have had success in this race in recent times. Dug deep to win the Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield her latest and will sit just off them from barrier 10. A winning chance.
10. THERMOSPHERE $18
The Godolphin galloper ran 6th in the Light Fingers and should be competitive enough but a top three finish might be slightly beyond her.
11. ELIZABEEL $19
Was ok when 4th in the Light Fingers Stakes but might be a tier below the best in this race.
12. JOVIALITY $31
Will need to improve after finishing down the track in the Light Fingers Stakes.
13. PHILIZZY $81
Another that was well beaten in the Light Fingers and hasn’t measured up in similar company in the past.
14. LOVE SENSATION $34
Melbourne filly that was 5th in the Light Fingers and isn’t the worst at the $34. Has been trimmed in from $101 when markets opened and might be worth keeping an eye on.
15. MIRAVELLE $27
Is likely to need the run and resumes after finishing 4th in the VRC Oaks last spring.
16. EIGHT DIAMONDS $81
Roughie that could only manage 6th in a BenchMark 72 at Kensington on February 17 and might need something easier.
17. PIPPALI $151
The first emergency will battle if she sneaks into the field.
