Sydney Cup Barrier Draw – When Will The Final Field Be Declared?

We will know the final field and barrier draw for the 2025 Sydney Cup on Tuesday, April 08, 2025.

The Sydney Cup barrier draw can often be conducted in person with connections of each runner selecting an item at random from a table; hidden from view on the item will be the starting barrier for the horse. This practice of having connections or a representative of each horse only takes place for the biggest races on the calendar each year.

Is There A Draw Bias in the Sydney Cup?

Barrier eight has been a blessing in the Sydney Cup with a whopping 10 winners jumping from that gate in the past four decades.

A single barrier producing so many winners is hardly an indication of a barrier draw bias. That barrier has certainly had its numbers bolstered when the calibre of Makybe Diva and The Offer have drawn that gate.

Outside of that outlier, there has been a fairly even spread of winners from barriers 12 or less.

Much like the Melbourne Cup, the barrier is less important as the race takes place over two miles and jockeys have time to make moves in the race.
