Top 5 Winx Stakes Winners
The Winx Stakes (1400m) is the first Group 1 race of the Australian racing season and has been won by some champion gallopers over the years. See who made our list of top 5 Winx Stakes winners since 1990.
In modern times, the feature race has been taken out by some outstanding gallopers.
Top 5 Winx Stakes winners.
1. WINX 2016/2017/2018
You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to work out who is top of this list with the mighty mare claiming the race named after her. Chris Waller’s champion claimed the Randwick feature when it was known as the Warwick Stakes in 2016 and 2017 before her 2018 triumph. She would retire with 37 wins from 43 starts but is bets known for her streak of 33 wins as she matured into the champion that we remember her for. Her win in the 2017 version of this race was one of her most breathtaking after giving us all a scare when missing the start by a big margin. Despite some ‘desperate’ moments late in the race, she managed to overhaul her stablemate, Foxplay, in tact to keep her streak (which was 17 heading into that race) in tact.
2. LONHRO (2001/2003)
It is pretty hard to split some of the others in selecting the exacta behind Winx but Lonhro gets the nod for mine. The flashy black horse won an amazing 26 races from 35 starts, including 11 Group 1’s and claimed the Warwick Stakes when it was a Group 2 in 2001 and 2003. He was a top performer in an era that also featured the likes of Sunline and Northerly. The crowd favourite split his time between Melbourne and Sydney, picking up his first feature in the 2001 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and his last in the 2004 Australian Cup (2000m).
3. SUPER IMPOSE (1990/1991)
Super Impose was a two time winner of the then Warwick Stakes back in 1990 and 1991 when it was raced at Warwick Farm. The Lee Freedman-trained galloper kicked off his campaigns in those years in the Warwick Stakes but it is his efforts over some of the Randwick mile races that he is better known for with unbelievable victories in both the Doncaster Mile (1600m) and the Epsom Handicap (1600m), winning those on two occasions each. Who can also forget his effort in the demolition derby edition of the Cox Plate (2040m) in 1992, getting up in the last stride with Greg Hall on board.
4. SUNLINE (1999)
The grand mare, Sunline, comes in at 4th in our top five Winx Stakes winners and had an extraordinary record, winning 32 of 48 career starts. The New Zealand gun would often settle in the lead before upping the ante at the business end, breaking those that would assume the chasing role. She won the Cox Plate (2040m) in the spring after her Warwick Stakes win with other majors coming in the Doncaster Mile (1600m), Coolmore Classic (1500m) and Waikato Sprint (1400m), while she took out a stirring edition of the Hong Kong Mile (1600m) in the year 2000.
5. PRIVATE STEER (2004)
Another mare to make this list is Private Steer, who excited racing fans with her get back and run on style of racing. The John O’Shea-trained galloper announced herself with a big win in the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in 2003 before performing very well in a series of top races as a four-year-old, winning the Doncaster Mile in stunning fashion ahead of Grand Armee in 2004 before her success in this race later that year.
