Our form expert provides Ballina tips for today’s horse racing at Ballina Racecourse and gives his best bets.

BEST BET 🏆

Race 3:  No.3  LEOPARDI  ($3 with bet365)

Brett Cavanough saddles-up LEOPARDI here who was impressive on debut and looks a serious contender for the major prize in this contest. Last start, the Written Tycoon gelding came off a trial win and made his racing debt, franking that trial effort, as he took out a 1000m Maiden Plate here on a Heavy 8 that day. With 59kgs and Ben Looker in the saddle, he crossed the line a convincing winner, putting 1.5 lengths on them. Looker sticks with him today as he maps to settle near the speed from gate five. Going on his only start to date, he looks the testing material in this event.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 1:  No.8  KING’S STAR  ($2.40 with TAB)

The Brett Cavanough-trained KING’S STAR has finished top-five in all five starts this preparation and is overdue for a win. Last start, the Zoustar gelding found the podium again when he beat all but one home in a Class 1/Maiden Plate over 2220m on a Heavy 8 at Grafton. He ran the last 600m, 1 length slower than benchmark, the best last-start effort here. Ben Looker was on board that day and has the job again for this contest. Rock-hard fit after five starts this time in, he drops back a little in distance today and coming in on the limit here, he is well weighted and will take catching.

BEST VALUE 💰

Race 4:  No.6  KAMBUNDJI  ($3.20 with Palmerbet)

We’re banking on a successful day for Brett Cavanough as we run with KAMBUNDJI here to take home the chocolates for the stable. Last start, the Swiss Ace mare did well to beat all but one home in a BM58 Hcp over 1012m at Coffs Harbour. Second-up that day, she travelled wide (without cover) and yet she still came within a whisker of victory, beaten a head on the line. She ran her last 600m, 3.4 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best in this line-up. We are also putting our faith in Ben Looker to (at least) ride a treble for us today as he takes the reins here for his second ride on the mare. She gets the gun-run from gate one and fitter for two runs back, she looks a serious player here.
