Cairns Preview & Best Bets – 03/03/2024

Cairns Tips for Sunday, March 3

Our form expert provides Cairns tips for today’s horse racing at Cannon Park Racecourse and gives his best bets.

Team Rowe saddle-up COUNTER COMMAND here who is in career-best form and back on home soil today, looks in the mix. Last start, the Counterattack gelding came off a win here in Restricted 65 company when he found one better at Townsville, taking home second prize in a Class 3 Hcp over 1400m. He didn’t race too kindly for Gabrielle Semmens that day but was still good enough to finish on the podium. Today he returns to his comfort zone where his five starts on the Cannon Park track have resulted in two wins and as many runner-up finishes. ‘Lethal’ Lacey Morrison was aboard for that win two starts back and after a brief absence away from the track, she returns today in pride of place aboard the five-year-old who draws ideally in gate two and he will take beating here.

Race 9:  No.5  FANCIFUL MR FOX

Townsville trainer, Michael Geaney saddles-up FANCIFUL MR FOX here who has been out of sorts at his past couple but a return to Cannon Park looks the way to go for him to bounce back today. Last start, the Kobayashi gelding used up a bit of juice at the start to keep up with the early pace and simply ran out of gas in the run home, finished unplaced in a Restricted 58 Hcp over 1300m on his home track. Today, he returns to where it all began, winning a 1400m Maiden here three starts back. He had 60kgs to carry that day and drew gate 11 (of 12) as well. Lacey Morrison picks up the late ride here which boosts his chances today. He is untried in heavy going but being a track and distance winner, that puts him in the ball game.

Race 7:  No.6  PLAGIARIZED

The locally-trained PLAGIARIZED is third-up today and boasting solid wet-track form, looks a sound prospect at (currently) double-figure odds here. Last start, the Exceed And Excel gelding was second-up when he took home third prize in Open company, here over the 950m sprint. On a Heavy 8 that day, Jason Taylor was aboard for the first time and sticks with him for today’s assignment. The five-year-old has won three times on wet tracks so conditions are ideal for him here. Already a winner when third-up, he draws nicely in gate four and maps to settle in the first half dozen. Fitter for two runs back, he looks great value today and is well worth an each-way ticket here.
