Our form expert provides Cairns tips for today’s horse racing at Cairns Racecourse and gives his best bets.

BEST BET 🏆

Race 4:  No.3  SMART IMAGE  ($1.75 with bet365)

Another newcomer to the north, SMART IMAGE is a former resident of the Tony Gollan stables down south and after just one run for new trainer Peter Rowe, he looks to be at home here and has all but a mortgage on this contest. Last start, he stepped out the Cannon Park track for the first time and with ‘lethal’ Lacey Morrison in the saddle, made it look like a procession as he clobbered his rivals in a BM70 Hcp over the 950m sprint. Carrying 61.5kgs, the Smart Missile gelding gave them a start and a beating as he crossed the line almost two lengths ahead of them that day. Morrison sticks with him here and ideally drawn in gate three today, whatever beats him home will surely win the race.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 3:  No.1  FODOR  ($2.20 with bet365)

Locally-trained by Steve Massingham, FODOR is having his fourth race start today and yet to miss a podium finish, looks well placed here to keep that trend going. Last start, the son of Heroic Valour broke through for his first win when he took out a Three-Year-Old Hcp, here over the 875m sprint with regular stable rider Nathan Day aboard. He ran a new personal best that day, covering the trip, 4.3 lengths slower than benchmark which is more than 8 lengths quicker than his rivals here. He also recorded the fastest final 600m and 400m sectionals for the race. Formerly with the Chris Munce stables in Brisbane, he seems to have settled nicely in the north and fitter for two runs in, he should take a ton of beating here.

BEST VALUE 💰

Race 8:  No.2  WHEY MISCHIEF  ($3.30 with TAB)

Another from the Massingham stable is WHEY MISCHIEF who is having his second start for the new stable and looks the pick of the crop. Formerly with the Joe Waldron stables at Mornington (Vic), the Into Mischief gelding made his stable debut last start at Townsville where he made a big impression by winning the 1000m Maiden. Settling third, three lengths behind the leading pair, Nathan Day wound him up on straightening and he finished best to claim the top prize. He was doing his best work over the final 100m so the step up in trip today looks ideal. Fitter for that run, he will take beating here.
