Race 5 No. 4 FORTUNATE KISS- ($7)

This looks to be a suitable assignment for FORTUNATE KISS. The four-year-old has been solid at Group 2 level this spring and was luckless in the Rose Of Kingston Stakes (1400m) at Flemington two starts ago before getting back and working home solidly for 8th behind Chain Of Lightning in the Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on October 15. She has gone more than 7.8 lengths faster than standard at her past two starts and the four weeks in between runs should suit. Ben Melham rides and the pair can land a little closer this time around from barrier 2.

Race 8 No. 6 SCISSOR STEP- ($7.50)

Going with SCISSOR STEP in the Apache Cat Classic. The Matthew Ellerton-trained galloper resumed with a win ahead of Esta La Roca on Cox Plate day over the 1000m, toughing it out at the business end, while there was a decent gap back to 3rd. He went 5.5 lengths faster than standard that day and should be open to improvement. Second up last time he went a very healthy 11.7 lengths faster than standard when runner-up behind Midwest. He has an edge in fitness on that horse. Draws wide but the field should string out and he might be able to tuck in just behind them with cover.

Race 7 No. 4 BUFFALO RIVER- ($16)

Been a while in between drinks for BUFFALO RIVER but the Mike Moroney-trained galloper has been competitive in some solid races throughout the year. He wasn’t far away in the Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) three starts ago before having no luck in the Toorak Handicap (1600m). Liked his effort at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate day, finishing 3rd in the Crystal Mile. The six-year-old took up his customary front-running role before going down to My Oberon. That race rated through the roof and My Oberon wasn’t beaten far when 6th in the Champions Mile (1600m) last weekend at Flemington at his only run since, while the runner-up, Bankers Choice, was 6th in the Champions Stakes, just behind Anamoe. Look for Buffalo River to lead and he will be partnered by Damien Oliver, who seems to get the best out of the enigmatic galloper, riding him seven times for four wins and three minors.
