Race 5 No. 6 EXCESS- ($2.40)

EXCESS can be an improver in Race 5. The locally trained filly lined up in a stronger race than this at Flemington on March 2 when resuming and settled up front over the 1100m, doing a few things wrong in the run before fading into 7th position behind Diamond Decorator. She will find this easier and returns to the scene over her debut performance that saw her score well over the 1000m here. A big firmer in the early betting, she should get the gun run from barrier 3 and will be ridden by Jamie Mott, who provides a 27% profit on turnover when combining with the stable.

Race 1 No.3 HAMPTON PALACE- ($3.40)

This might be the one for HAMPTON PALACE to finally break through. The Danny O’Brien-trained galloper has placed at his past three runs and was grabbed late at Werribee two starts ago before a similar effort at Hamilton over the 1400m last time. He was posted three deep throughout and raced greenly in the straight. A slight firmer in the early being, the son of Russian Revolution comes in with the best last start benchmark figures of any runner and has the early speed to find a spot from the wide draw.

Race 8 No. 9 EUGENIUS- ($15.20)

Best Value comes up in the final race of the evening and it is EUGENIUS that is not without a chance at the each-way quote. The three-year-old has had just the one run this team in for a 4th at Pakenham. He settled handy in that race before sticking on. At his last campaign he showed some promise early on and was a 10-length improver on benchmark figures when second up, going from a runner-up performance at Flemington to a 3rd placing at Caulfield. He eventually broke his Maiden at Mornington by a big margin. The son of Magnus will strip fitter for this and gets the 3kg claim for Lauren Burke.
