BEST BET 🏆
Race 1 No. 4 AFTERNOON TEA – ($3.10)
The former Danny O’Brien trained AFTERNOON TEA nearly caused a boil over when making her Top End debut for Phillip Cole. An alarming drifter in the betting that day, Afternoon Tea went within half a length of upsetting War Games over 1100 metres here. Wayne Davis stuck with the mare in Katherine and the pair got the job done despite another betting drift. Davis gave her a treat of the ride in following the pace before peeling off three-wide to come away into the straight. Jumped beautifully when racing over a similar distance here last start. Davis afforded Afternoon Tea every possible in front. Perhaps they went too slow as Mr Boomjangles was able to outsprint them to the line. Should find one to stalk from her outside middle draw, and Afternoon Tea can make amends here.
NEXT BEST 🥈
Race 4 No. 1ALL STARDOM – ($4.80)
We’ll take a lead from trainer Chris Pollard as he re-applies the blinkers to ALL STARDOM for his Darwin debut. Backing them at their first start on dirt can be fraught with danger; however, we wouldn’t expect the blinkers to go on unless Pollard felt he had the horse right. Races best when putting himself into the race early and there does not appear to be a lot of speed in this. Casey Hunter will be wanting to use that inside draw to advantage or be with All Star boasting a sound first-up record.
BEST VALUE 💰
Race 3 No. 3 CHARRETERA – ($18)
Racing in bar plates for the first time saw CHARRETERA jump at double his opening quote as the starter let them go. He was away slowly then struggled to find any sort of rhythm at his first attempt on the dirt track. He had been laboring some four lengths behind the second-last horse for much of the race. Charretera was finally able to gain some traction with the field straightening for home with Britney Wong hunting the rails run. Finished off okay and the six-furlongs should be far more to his liking.
