Doomben Preview & Best Bets – 13/03/2024

Doomben Tips 11/02/2023

Our form expert provides Doomben tips for Saturday’s horse racing at Doomben Racecourse and gives his best bets.

Race 4:  No.3  MAJOR ARTIE  ($1.95 with TAB)

The Tulloch Lodge galloper MAJOR ARTIE is three starts into this campaign and making his Doomben debut here, looks the testing material at this level. Last start, the Artie Schiller gelding looked in control after taking over at the 300m mark, but in a three-way go to the line, was nosed out and had to settle for third prize that day in a BM88 Hcp over 1500m at Rosehill behind Bold Mac (our Next Best 🥈 tip in race four at Randwick). He steps-up to the mile here where he is unbeaten in three starts over the trip. He should find this contest a little easier and has James Orman on his back for this assignment. With a trouble-free run here, he will take beating.

Race 3:  No.3  MERIMEE  ($5.50 with Palmerbet)

The Chris Waller-trained MERIMEE is third-up here and ticks enough boxes to be considered a winning chance in this event. Last start, the Winning Rupert mare improved enough when second-up to take home third prize in a Class 5 Hcp, here over 1350m. Beaten just 1.5 lengths, she ran her last 600m, 3 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best last-start effort here, while posting the fastest final 800m to 200m sectionals as well. James Orman is back in the saddle after finishing runner-up twice previously from four rides on her to date. Waller fits the tongue tie for the first time here and already a winner when third-up and a two-time winner at Doomben, she looks right in the thick of things in this contest.

Race 8:  No.4  ROMAN AUREUS  ($5 with Neds)

The Brian Wakefield-trained ROMAN AUREUS is third-up here and sports the blinkers again as he lines-up on his most successful track to date. Last start, the Red Element gelding came off an impressive win in Open company at Toowoomba when he lined-up in the Listed Sunshine Coast Cup. Stepping-up to the 1400m that day, he gave his all to grab third prize, beaten two lengths on the line. He ran the trip out, 4 lengths quicker than benchmark, the equal best here along with Simply Fly and Cepheus. Back to Doomben here where his resume reads 16 starts at the track for five wins and no less than nine minor placings. Larry Cassidy has steered the six-year-old to all eight career wins and remains aboard for this assignment. With just a little luck in running and a clear run to the line, he can test this field all the way home.
