Our form expert provides Doomben tips for today’s horse racing at Doomben Racecourse and gives his best bets.

BEST BET 🏆

Race 2:  No.2  SHAMROCK  LU  ($3.80 with Palmerbet)

Tony Gollan saddles-up two runners here with SHAMROCK LU looking a solid chance of upsetting his stablemate (and race-favourite) today. Last start, the Hallowed Crown gelding was second-up and bounced back from his first-up mishap (rearing at the start and taking no part in the race), when he proved too strong for a BM90 field over 1000m at Eagle Farm. He ran that trip out, 5.8 lengths quicker than benchmark, a new personal best and the best here by more than 4 lengths. He also posted the fastest final 800m to 200m sectionals for the race. Ideally drawn in gate three, James Orman is in charge today and with four of his six career wins coming over this distance, he will no trouble handling the trip. Already a winner third-up, he is a genuine winning chance today.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 3:  No.2  ZOUKINA  ($8 with bet365)

The Ballina-based ZOUKINA is third-up today and ready to win. Last start, the Zoustar mare improved from her first-up run when finishing fifth in a NMW Hcp, here over today’s 1350m trip. She covered that trip, 1.3 lengths slower than benchmark, still the best in this field. She gets back in her races so the wide gate isn’t a big issue today. Jasmine Cornish has the reins and her 3kg claim only enhances her chances. She boasts a good track record with 10 starts here ending in two wins and four other podium finishes. With a trouble-free run here, the six-year-old looks in the mix at odds today.

BEST VALUE 💰

Race 5:  No.6  DANEZEL  ($12 with Palmerbet)

The Robert Heathcote-trained DANEZEL is fourth-up today and looks well placed here to return to the winner’s circle. Last start, the Sizzling gelding ran home strongly to beat all but the placegetters to the line in a Class 2 Plate over 1350m at Ipswich. He ran his last 600m, 4.7 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best in this line-up. He also recorded the fastest final 800m, 600m and 400m sectionals for the contest. He boasts a win and three minor placings from just six starts at the track and is a winner over the distance here as well. Michael Cahill in on board for today’s assignment and now rock-hard fit after three runs in, he can give this a real shake at (currently) double-figure odds.
