Doomben Tips 25/01/2023

Our form expert provides Doomben tips for today’s horse racing at Doomben Racecourse and gives his best bets.

BEST BET 🏆

Race 5:  No.3  NASHIRA  ($2 with bet365)

The O’Dea & Hoysted-trained NASHIRA is third-up today and brings good form into this contest today. Last start, the Zoustar gelding was second-up when he impressed greatly with a close-up second behind the promising King Kapa (who won again last Saturday and in our list of QLD Blackbookers for the week). He tracked King Kapa all the way and took ground off him in the final 50 metres. He ran the trip out, 5.5 lengths quicker than benchmark, setting a new personal best and the best effort here by 4 lengths. He also set the fastest final 800m, 400m and 200m sectionals for the race. He gets the gun-run from gate one today and there’s no King Kapa here. He looks the best of the day.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 6:  No.3  TIDAL CREEK  ($2.60 with Palmerbet)

Annabel Neasham saddles-up TIDAL CREEK here who is fourth-up and ready to perform. Last start, the Snitzel improved enough to beat all but one home in a BM72 Hcp over the mile at Warwick Farm. He box-seated that day behind race-favourite The Milky Bar Kid, and soon after, got the better of him and took over, only to be nutted-out on the line. He ran a new personal best that day, covering the trip, half a length slower than benchmark, still the best in this field. Down in grade here, he also carries less weight after the claim and rock-hard fit from three starts this time in, he looks the testing material here.

BEST VALUE 💰

Race 8:  No.11  MERIMEE  ($3.80 with Ladbrokes)

The Chris Waller-trained MERIMEE is second-up here and ticks enough boxes to warrant plenty of respect in this contest. Last start, the Winning Rupert mare was fresh off a 19-week spell and in need of a run when she finished mid-field in a BM72 over 1400m at Eagle Farm. Spotting them eight lengths on the turn, she was held-up at a crucial stage but still ran home strongly to finish within three lengths of the winner. She will strip fitter today and already a winner when second-up and a two-time winner at the track and distance, she looks set to stamp her authority here with two-time winning rider, Jim Byrne on board.
