Geraldton Tips 25/01/2023

BEST BET 🏆

Race 3 No. 2 DESIGNATED DRINKER – ($2.70)

Winning form is good form which is what DESIGNATED DRINKER brings to the races at Geraldton on Wednesday. He has resumed with three straight wins under Peta Edwards following a dominant first-up win over seven furlongs. Designated Drinker was always trucking for Edwards as the pair circled the field on turning. Designated Drinker burst away into the straight to leave a margin back to his rivals as he raced past the line. Had to do it tough when trapped deep racing over the same second-up. The horse dug deep for Edwards to score convincingly over his rivals while down in weight. Lumped 60 kilos last start when sent back to the tail after copping a check at the start. Proven too strong late rising to 1900 metres and trainer Barry Newnham keeps him to trip.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 8 No. 2 ALBERT – ($2.60)

Ashley Maley has a couple going around in the last where we will side with the market support for ALBERT. He was a winner here over the mile when breaking his maiden under Lisa Staples. Has been around the mark since, including a close runner-up performance over the mile here two back. Found the box-seat that day after leading early with Staples strung-up for a run behind the tiring leaders on straightening. Blue Cheyenne had full momentum down the outside to score with Albert sprinting sharply once the gap came to force a photo on the line. Brave effort by both horse and jock as the saddle slipped when well in the market last time. Back to 1400 metres off a good draw seems ideal as Albert can race a little fiercely.

BEST VALUE 💰

Race 2 No. 2 CAFE NERA – ($6)

Speed: Walking – Pressure: None. These small fields over a trip often become tactical affairs which can be a headache to work out. End of the day we are not convinced many of these want the trip, so they certainly won’t be forcing the issue early. Would love to see Taj Dyson take off from the back mid race to turn this into a genuine staying affair. He’s riding CAFE NERA who is the only genuine stayer in the race. She’s probably also got a little more upside than some of those who are struggling to win their races. Fitter for two runs back over 1400 metres while rising to a suitable distance third-up, and Dyson can take the race away from a few non-winners competing here.
