Ipswich Tips 28/04/2023

Race 1 No. 3 THAWRA – ($3.15)

Toowoomba trainer has THAWRA getting to his third start this prep. The talented sprinter has won more than half of his career races despite not being able to get into a full preparation.  Thawra is coming off a last start track and distance win when sitting three wide on the speed, Ben Thompson kept his mount balanced before going to work on him inside the furlong. Thawra exploded clear once he found his rhythm into the straight to put his Benchmark 70 field away. This would appear to be a slight step back in class on that race, and Thawra can make it two from two on Friday.

Race 8 No. 3 MUMMIFICATION – ($5.30)

The Stuart Kendrick trained MUMMIFICATION created some interest with his barrier trial recently. Kendrick chose to trial his 3yo over the 1200 metres in a big field where Mummification missed the kick with the blinkers on. He remained a clear last of the big field until apprentice rider Montana Philpot slipped him a little rein on turning. Mummification cruised up under his own steam to hit the front and win the trial in reasonable time. Senior Jockey Ben Thompson takes the reins from an ideal gate come race day. The blinkers stay on, and hopefully we see an improvement out of the gates from Mummification on Friday.

Race 4 No. 10 HEROIC INSTINCT – ($6.10)

Jimmy Byrne keeps the ride on HEROIC INSTINCT who will strip fitter for two handy runs this time in. Made ground from the back over 1300 metres at Rockhampton. The winner Bold Hussar got away from him into the straight before Heroic Instinct found his rhythm late. Settled much closer as Paul Butterworth sent him around in a 1666m maiden here last start. Byrne followed not too far off the speed with the runner-up Encompass back to his inside for much of the race. There was little between those two horses in the run to the line as they chased gamely behind Big Ticket Boy. Heroic Instinct can improve as he stays to trip here and should find a kind run in transit.
