BEST BET 🏆
Race 5: No.2 MOCIAL CHIEF ($2.40 with bet365)
Rockhampton galloper MOCIAL CHIEF is in career-best form of late and his love of this track has him standing out as the best of the day. Last start, the Press Statement gelding came off a first-up win on his home track when he lined-up here in Open company and beat all but one home in similar company over the 1050m sprint. Severely interfered with at barrier rise, he still couldn’t go the early pace and settled last. Turning for home, Jason Taylor pulled him wide and over the final 100m, three of them fought it out, with ‘the Chief’ finishing a nose back in second place on the line. He ran his last 600m 2 lengths quicker than benchmark while recording the fastest final 800m to 200m sectionals as well. Conditions here are almost identical today with Taylor remaining in charge and from gate two he maps to settle right behind the pace. With a trouble-free run here, he looks just the ticket today.
NEXT BEST 🥈
Race 2: No.3 A FIGHTING FURY ($4.40 with Palmerbet)
Locally-trained by Olivia Cairns, A FIGHTING FURY is four starts into this preparation and his results to date suggest he is the one to beat here today. Last start, the Fastnet Rock gelding recorded his first win on his home track when he beat all but one home in Open company over the mile trip. He ran the last 600m, 4 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best in this field. He has raced on-speed in all four starts this time in which has paid dividends as he is yet to miss a top-two finish. Tactics may change today as he draws wide in gate nine and dropping sharply in grade here, he has another 8kgs to carry in this event. Ryan Wiggins is aboard for the first time and he has plenty of experience with the Cairns stable. Whatever decision is made, (in regards to race tactics), Wiggins is the man to deliver and already a winner at the track and distance now, the seven-year-old looks a real treat to this field today.
