Race 2 No. 8 VERMENTINO- ($1.75)

VERMENTINO can go on with the job in Race 2 of the day at Moonee Valley. The promising galloper from the Maher/Eustace camp has won all three of his career starts and led all the way in what was a dominant performance at Sandown in a BenchMark 70 over the 1200m on December 14, defeating Bellinger by nearly two lengths. He well and truly looks up to the step in grade and is likely to lead or settle on the speed, which is usually the go at the Valley.

Race 7 No. 1 ELITE ICON- ($6.50)

This looks to be a suitable assignment for ELITE ICON. The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained galloper gets back to the 1200m for the first time since winning two at the track and trip at his last preparation. He has had three runs this time in and was ok on the Heavy over the 955m when resuming before not handling the track at Ballarat after that. At his most recent start he faded late when 5th at Sandown. Back at the Valley and over the 1200m, the four-year-old is right in the mix from the inside gate.

Race 8 No. 2 FISSION- ($9)

Best Value comes up in Race 8 and it is FISSION that can provide a solid contest over the 1200m. The Griffiths & de Kock galloper steps up from the 1000m and settled handy on December 24 before just missing behind Rich Fortune. Those two put a gap on the rest. He was three deep the trip but stuck on to go 5.7 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which are the best last start figures of any runner. Joe Bowditch rides and is one for two from the stable. He just needs to find a spot in the running line early on from barrier 9.
