Mornington Tips 24/09/2022

Race 1 No. 2  WEE NESSY ($2.20)

WEE NESSY can open up the Mornington card with a win. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained galloper has had two runs this time in and was a dominant winner in Maiden grade when resuming before heading to Flemington and running 6th at Listed level in the Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m) on September 10. On that occasion, the daughter of Snitzel settled back and ran on strongly between runners. She went 5.2 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which are better figures than what any horse in this race has produced. Down in grade and with Jamie Kai to ride, she should be hard to beat.

Race 7 No. 9 KING OF THE CASTLE- ($6.50)

Didn’t mind the run of KING OF THE CASTLE at his first go in Australia and the Robert Hickmott-trained galloper can be an improver after finishing 7th behind High Emocean on September 10. That came over the 2500m and he was first up after a year since his last run in Ireland. The son of Galileo settled last in the field of 15 and lacked a bit of dash early on in the straight before running on to finish just over four lengths away. He went 10.3 lengths faster than standard at Flemington, producing the best last start figures of any runner. With just the 54kg on his back and the fitness in the tank, he can give this a big shake.

Race 6 No. 2  APRES LA MER- ($7.50)

APRES LA MER can go close in Race 6 of the day at Mornington. The six-year-old has led at her past couple of starts and was caught wide at Sandown when 4th on August 24 before just being grabbed late at the Hillside circuit when runner up behind Sandown over the 1300m on September 14. She heads back to Mornington and was a winner at the track and trip in this grade back in June. The likelihood of a Soft track is a bonus and the daughter of Reward For Effort will take some running down.
