Murray Bridge Tips 2/01/2023
BEST BET 🏆
Race 6 No. 5 IL DON CAVALLO – ($6)
We followed IL DON CAVALLO during his debut prep after impressing in his first start win at Gawler. Campbell Rawiller had settled him towards the rear of the field for trainer Pete Nolan. He was left searching for runs after becoming chopped out prior to straightening. The race appeared all but over with Rawiller persisting for a run between horses well into the furlong. Il Don Cavallo burst through the gap to score over Seafaring and Freedom Day in that 1100 metre maiden. No jump out to go on, however that’s not a bad thing as five furlongs might be short of his best. The open spaces and big straight of Gifford Hill should suit, as does racing back on top of the ground.
NEXT BEST 🥈
Race 3 No. 2 VERSETTO – ($4.60)
The third at Murray Bridge looms as an intriguing race in which we’ll side with VERSETTO. We noted this horse off an excellent barrier trial when going close to Terbium while leaving a gap back to the others. He just missed They Call Me Alvin over 1000 metres here in his subsequent first-up run. He was resuming off a break of nearly two years which is why we chose just to watch that race. Didn’t find a lot of room when finishing strongly second-up behind Hong Bao over 1100 metres at Morphettville. Nicole Irwin Brought him back to the Bridge where he ran good time on the speed to weaken late over seven furlongs behind Fleurieu Flipper. Can stalk impressive debut winner Half A Dram before using his bulk to build up the Gifford Hill straight before the enigmatic Turf Decision strikes at the pair late.
BEST VALUE 💰
Race 5 No. 1 LORD VARYS – ($7)
Felicity Atkinson rejoins the Miceal McClean trained LORD VARYS for the first time since their Jamestown win back in October. Beat a handy field that day despite racing under the Non-Tab banner. Gutsy effort when racing on the speed since to finish a length astern of the winner Sea Witness. Good effort with the latest effort on a heavy track at Clare behind Prance ‘N’ Dance. Better suited back on top of the ground and generally races well around here at Murray Bridge.
