Race 2:  No.2  SOPHIA’S LASS  ($2.10 with Palmerbet)

Unbeaten this time in, Lismore galloper SOPHIA’S LASS sees this track for the first time today but has done enough to suggest it will take more than that to deprive her of a hat-trick here. Last start, the Better Than Ready filly was second-up and coming off a first-up (Maiden) win at Lismore (1210m) when she franked that effort by destroying a Class 1 field over the longer 1400m trip at Ballina. With Matty McGuren remaining aboard (after that Maiden win), she led from barrier to box and put more than three lengths on them over the line. McGuren sticks with her today and up in weight and distance here, expect a more tactical ride with plenty of early pace in the race. Ideally drawn in gate two, she still maps to settle in the first half-dozen and from there, with a clear run home, she should prove very hard to hold out.

Race 6:  No.4  BABAYKA  ($3.30 with Palmerbet)

The Brett Cavanagh-trained BABAYKA has returned in full flight and looks a real force in this contest. Last start, the four-year-old was second-up off a 16-week spell where he went one better and took out a Class 1 Hcp over 1110m on a Firm 2 at Lismore. He ran his last 600m, half a length quicker than benchmark, the best in this line-up, while posting the fastest final 200m sectional as well. The solid footing clearly suited the gelding as he put almost two lengths on the field that day. Luke Dittman has been in the saddle for both starts this preparation and remains there for today’s contest. The forecast Good 3 today will surely suit and in great touch, looks the testing material here.

Race 7:  No.3  KERMANTIC  ($5 with Unibet)

Locally-trained by Matt Dunn, KERMANTIC has had plenty of racing this time in and should be ready to rock in this event. Last start, the Kermadec gelding stepped-up in grade and distance and from a wide gate, wasn’t disgraced when finishing fifth in a BM66 Hcp over 1400m at Ballina. He drops back a little in grade here and has Matty McGuren sticking with him today. Just the one start on his home track (three starts back) saw him take home third prize that day. Drawn nicely in gate four, he maps to get the run of the race here (one out, one back) and with a trouble-free run, he could prove the one to beat in this company.
