New Zealand Preview Saturday October 15

New Zealand Tips 15/10/2022  (Hastings & Ashburton)

Our form expert provides New Zealand tips for Saturday’s horse racing at Hastings and Ashburton Racecourses and gives his best bets.

Race 8:  No.14  MUSTANG VALLEY  ($3.30 with BlueBet)

A smart field faces the starter for the feature race of the day with the Andrew Forsman-trained MUSTANG VALLEY looking a winning chance at the weights. Last start, the Vanbrugh mare kept her good form going when she beat all but one to the line in the Group 1 Arrowfield Stud Stakes over 1600m at Matamata. She settled well back that day and was unable to run down the smart La Crique in the end. She drops in weight here and is joined by Michael McNab who is no stranger to success in big race events. Conditions will be ideal with the four-year-old boasting three wins and two runner-up finishes from her five starts on heavy tracks to date. From gate six here, if she can secure a clear run home, she should prove hard to hold out.

Race 6:  No.11  BARI  ($5 with bet365)

The Margaret Falconer-trained BARI has his first look at the Hastings track here and two starts back, looks ready to continue on with his good form. Last start, the Proisir gelding came off a first-up win when he beat all but one home at Te Rapa over 1200m. He drew wide that day (10 of 12) and settled mid-field but made up ground to take home the silver medal. Tayla Mitchell sticks with him here where he draws nicely in gate three and maps to settle right behind the speed with cover. Unbeaten in heavy going, he can only strip fitter here and looks the one to beat.

Race 1:  No.10  MARGARET JEAN  ($7.50 with Unibet)

The Stephen Marsh-trained MARGARET JEAN is three starts into this preparation and looks ready to win. Last start, the Sacred Falls mare finished just two lengths from the winner in a BM75 over 2100m at Te Rapa. With Craig Grylls aboard, she fought on gamely to take home fourth prize in an 11-strong field. She usually takes a few starts to find her best, she now looks up to this challenge. Grylls sticks with her as she sees the Hastings track for the first time. Expect further improvement from her in the is contest.

Race 8:  No.4  BURNVUE  ($5 with Ladbrokes)

The Lance Robinson-trained BURNVUE is in career-best form and looks the testing material in this year’s Cup. Last start, the Redwood gelding was impressive when taking out the NZ Cup Trial over 1800m at Riccarton. With Lee Callaway aboard, he settle mid-field but finished too strong for them in the end, takin home the main prize. He is already a winner here over this trip and has won four of his past six starts. In this frame of mind, he will take a ton of beating here.

Race 6:  No.7  PERFECTLY SUITED  ($5.50 with Unibet)

The Riccarton Park-based PERFECTLY SUITED has hit the ground running with three top-two finishes to start her career and she looks well placed here to keep that trend going. Last start, the Savile Row filly was first-up off a six-month break when she beat all but one home in the Listed Canterbury Belle Stakes over 1200m on her home track. From gate 13 (of 14), Samantha Wynne settled her back in the field and she finished with a flurry to take home the runner-up’s cheque. Wynne sticks with her here and fitter for that first-up effort, she will prove hard to hold out in this contest.

Race 7:  No.10  AMBERECHO  ($9.50 with TAB)

Team Parsons saddle-up AMBERECHO here who is fresh off a 20-week break and ready to fly on fresh legs. Last start, the Echoes Of Heaven mare ended her last campaign with a win at Wingatui in a BM74 over 1200m. That finished off a very successful preparation, ending in five podium finishes from as many starts. Already a first-up winner, she is also a three-time winner over the 1200m and drawn well in gate five here, she will give a good account of herself in this contest, at odds.
