Race 2: No.2 CHENIN ($3.50 with Ladbrokes)

The Mark Newnham-trained CHENIN sees the Newcastle track for the first time today and fitter for two runs back, looks right in this contest. Last start, the Pierro mare improved from her first-up effort when she beat all but one home in a BM64 Hcp over 1500m at Hawkesbury. She covered that journey, 2.6 lengths slower than benchmark, still the best last-start effort here by more than three lengths. She also recorded the fastest final 800m to 200m sectionals for the race. Already a winner when third-up, she draws well in gate four and maps to settle just behind the speed. With a trouble-free run here, her track debut can be a winning one today.

Race 7: No.6 GENDARMARIE ($6 with Neds)

The Rosehill-based GENDARMARIE also makes her track debut today and she looks a genuine threat here. Last start, the Epaulette filly was second-up when she hung-on to break through for her Maiden win over 1300m at Hawkesbury. She led from barrier to box that day with Jay Ford in the saddle. The stable have the confidence in the filly to push her up another 100m today with Ford remaining aboard for the ride. With little early speed here, the wide gate (10) shouldn’t be a real issue as she maps to cross and settle on the speed. She will strip fitter after those first two runs and while stepping up in grade, she does drop in weight. Going on trust, she could prove hard to run down again.
