Our form expert provides Newcastle tips for today’s horse racing at Newcastle Racecourse and gives his best bets.

ANCHOR BET ⚓

Race 3:  No.1  BACKROWER  ($1.55 with Unibet)

The Michael Freedman-trained BACKROWER is second-up today and with such a big drop in grade here, he looks the best of the day. Last start, the Astern colt came off a 10-week break and having just his third race start, faced city-class gallopers in a BM72 over 1300m at Rosehill. After running into trouble several times, he still finished strongly to beat all but one home that day, beaten a head on the line. He ran that out, 1.7 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best here. Down in grade and back to provincial class racing today, Tommy Berry sticks with him and ideally drawn in gate two, he should take a ton of beating here. Use this fellow as your ‘anchor’ leg for any multi-bets.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 7:  No.5  NARITO  ($1.80 with bet365

The Chris Waller-trained NARITO made a solid statement on debut and looks well placed here for back-to-back wins today. Facing the starter for the first time, the Maurice gelding clobbered his maiden rivals at Wyong, putting more than two lengths on them in the 1100m contest. He ran his last 600m, 2.2 lengths quicker than benchmark and recorded the fastest final 800m to 200m sectionals for the race as well. James McDonald steered him home that day and sticks with him here. He is the rookie of this field but can only improve off that first run. He should take beating here.

BEST VALUE 💰

Race 4:  No.5  JUST LIKE LISA  ($7.50 with Neds)

Locally-trained by David Atkins, JUST LIKE LISA is in sensational form this time in and is certainly a winning chance here at odds. Last start, the Choisir mare came off a good win over the mile in a Class 1 at Scone when she lined-up against similar company, here on a Heavy 8 that day. Jumping from the outside gate (12), she settled back in the field and while no match for the winner that day, she crossed the line in second place, more than three lengths ahead of the rest. She also posted the fastest final 800m, 600m and 400m sectionals for the race. She meets similar company again today and should be there at finish with a trouble-free run here.
