BEST BET 🏆
Race 6: No.5 BORDERLANDS ($3.50 with BlueBet)
After a poor start to her racing career, Goulburn-based filly BORDERLANDS has got it together now and looks a genuine winning chance here. On debut, the Headwater filly finished 10 lengths last in a 1300m Maiden at Corowa but then followed that up with a much-improved effort, taking home third prize in a 1200m Maiden at Wagga. Then last start, she improved even further to break through for her Maiden win, this time over the longer 1400m trip on a Heavy 8 at Bathurst. She won that contest by almost two lengths on the line and faces a similar journey here. With three starts behind her now, she should be rock-hard fit for this contest and gets the gun-run from gate one today. Jean Van Overmeire (who rode the runner-up behind the filly last start) gets the ride here and from that draw, looks the one to beat.
NEXT BEST 🥈
Race 2: No.2 GAME COVE ($7.50 with Unibet)
The Wagga-based galloper, GAME COVE, has had excuses at his past couple of runs and looks better placed here in the conditions to mount a real challenge in this contest today. Last start, the Outreach gelding showed (yet again) he dislike for heavy tracks when he finished almost five lengths behind the winner in a Class 1 Hcp over 1000m on his home track. Finishing fourth in the event, he ran the trip, 7.6 lengths slower than benchmark, still the best last-start effort in this field. His only start here was three starts back when he took home second prize in a BM58 (on a Soft 5 that day). Billy Owen has been in charge for every ride this preparation and remains in the job today. Ideally drawn in gate three, he maps to be box-seating on settling and with the more favourable conditions today, he looks a real threat to this field and is capable of saluting here at odds.
BEST VALUE 💰
Race 7: No.10 ENCYCLOPEDIA ($23 with bet365)
The Todd Smart-trained ENCYCLOPEDIA is three starts into this preparation and gets conditions to suit here to mount a real challenge at big odds today. Last start, the Divine Prophet gelding faced his third-straight heavy track and again missed a podium finish when crossing the line in fifth place in a Class 1 on his home track at Canberra. On a Heavy 10 that day, he ran the trip out, 9.2 lengths slower than benchmark, which was a new personal best for him, and the best in this line-up as well. Billy Owen sticks with him here and from gate four, he maps to settle in the first half dozen (with cover). Fitter for those three runs back, he should be at his peak here and on the firmer racing surface, he looks a strong chance of playing a role today. Long-shot lovers get the chance to snap-up a bargain here with the four-year-old (currently) a $23 chance with the bagmen. He certainly looks well worth an each-way ticket in this contest.
