BEST BET 🏆
Race 5: No.4 CEASEFIRE ($4.80 with Ladbrokes)
The Paul Messara-trained CEASEFIRE has been in good touch this time in and with a good drop in weight today, looks right in this contest. Last start, the Panzer Division gelding beat all but one to the line in a BM68 Hcp over 1100m at Hawkesbury. Beaten a whisker that day, he ran the trip out, half a length quicker than benchmark, the best in this line-up. He steps up a little in grade here but drops 4.5kgs from that run with Dylan Gibbons on board again. Five starts on a dry track have resulted in four top-two finishes so conditions today look ideal for the five-year-old. Nicely drawn in gate five today, he maps to settle in the first half-dozen and now five starts into this preparation, he should be at his peak for this. He looks the goods today.
NEXT BEST 🥈
Race 4: No.13 MYSTIC MERMAID ($4 with Unibet)
The Chris Waller-trained MYSTIC MERMAID is first emergency here but should she gain a start today, she looks a genuine chance of victory. Last start, the Fastnet Rock mare made it five-straight podium finishes when she beat all but one home in a BM72 Hcp over 1580m at Canterbury. On a Heavy 9 that day, she led from the outset and inside the final 200m, had enough start to win the Melbourne Cup and looked home for all money, but was grabbed right on the line by a swooper. James McDonald was aboard that day and sticks with her today. Down in weight here, she maps to cross and settle in the first-four and in her current form, she can give this contest a real shake.
BEST VALUE 💰
Race 3: No.4 RITA MAY ($7 with Palmerbet)
Hawkesbury galloper RITA MAY has been consistent in her first six career starts and looks well placed here to bounce back from her Randwick failure and find herself back on the podium today. After finishing top-two at her first two starts this time in, last start she failed to go on with it on Randwick’s main course, finishing second-last in a BM78 Hcp over 1000m. She still ran the trip out, 3 lengths quicker than benchmark, the second-best here (by a whisker) to Never Second who is drawn even wider and carries more weight. Every horse has a hiccup now and then and down in grade today and back against the fillies and mares, Rita gets her chance to return to the winner’s circle here at odds.
