Race 1 No. 12 OCEANIQUE.– ($5)

This looks to be a suitable assignment for OCEANIQUE. The Team Hawkes galloper has had the two career starts for a 4th after a wide run on debut at Newcastle over the 1200m before stepping to the 1400m and running on to fill the exacta behind Rheinberg at the Hillside track here on December 7. The daughter of Ocean Park knocked over a couple of those that she meets in this race and went one length faster than standard benchmark, which is a better figure than what any runner in this race has produced. Improvement to come at her third start and with Damien Oliver on board.

Race 8 No. 13 BIRDIES GALORE- ($8)

BIRDIES GALORE shapes as an each-way player in Race 8 of the evening at Sandown. The Patrick Payne-trained galloper had a couple of runs at the spring carnival and was 3rd at Listed level on Cox Plate day behind Wee Nessy before stepping to the 1400m in the Desirable Stakes (1400m) at Flemington and running 9th, beaten four lengths by Razeta. She was three deep with no cover in that. The daughter of Spieth drops back to the 1200m and comes in with the freshen up. Logan McNeil rides and claims the 2kg.

Race 5 No. 2 CHARMING DI- ($10)

CHARMING DI might be worth a play in Race 5 of the evening at Sandown. The filly from the John Moloney camp was a winner in this grade over the 1000m and has since settled back in slowly run affairs before grinding away late. She drops in grade after a last start effort that saw her only manage 7th in a BenchMark 70 at the Hillside circuit. This should be more to her liking and the daughter of Rubick has attracted support in the early betting, while the 2kg claim for Carleen Hefel gets her down to a winnable weight.
