BEST BET 🏆
Race 4: No.3 DIRECT AFFECT ($2.40 with Palmerbet)
The Paul Murray-trained DIRECT AFFECT has been back on track lately and this contest looks just the ticket for him today. Last start, the Fighting Sun gelding came off a win on this track when he finished fourth (after being elevated through protest) in a BM64 Midway Hcp over the mile on his home track at Kembla Grange. Beaten just half a length on the line, he ran that trip out, almost a length quicker than benchmark, a new personal best for him and the best last-start here by more than 8 lengths. He steps-up in grade today but has the recent runs on the board to suggest he will prove more than competitive. Ideally drawn in gate two, he maps to box-seat on settling and should prove hard to beat from there.
NEXT BEST 🥈
Race 7: No.9 BREAKAWAY WEEK ($2.20 with Ladbrokes)
The Keith Dryden-trained BREAKAWAY WEEK has found the podium at her past four starts without winning, but her luck can change here today. Last start, the Dissident mare came from a mid-field position to claim third prize in a 1400m Maiden on her home track at Canberra. With Alysha Collett on board that day, she drew wide but still managed to run her last 600m, half a length quicker than benchmark, the best in this field. She gets the gun-run from gate one today as James Innes Jnr is legged aboard for the first time and with a trouble-free run here, she can end the run of minor placings in this contest.
BEST VALUE 💰
Race 6: No.3 HEADSTOCK ($4.80 with Palmerbet)
The Robert & Luke Price partnership saddle-up HEADSTOCK here who is in great touch this time in and looks a genuine chance of going back-to-back today. Last start, the Headwater gelding was third-up and made it count when he finally broke through in a Maiden Plate over 1200m at Moruya. No benchmarking stats are available for that event however he did post the fastest final 200m sectional for that race as he crossed the line half a length in front of the 12-strong field. He is ideally drawn in gate three here and maps to settle in the first half-dozen. Making his track debut today, the scene looks set for a repeat of that last-start performance.
