Stawell Tips 6/1/2023

BEST BET 🏆

Race 7 No. 2 KOMACHI– ($4)

KOMACHI gets his chance to chalk up the second win of his career in Race 7. The consistent performer has finished top three in nine of 13 career starts and was excellent off a tough run at Sandown on December 21 over the 1600m, finishing 3rd behind Harbourmaster. The five-year-old was stepping up from the 1300m to the 1600m and achieved a career peak by going 3.7 lengths faster than standard benchmark. He sticks to the mile and anything like his last start effort should see the son of Kingman be very hard to hold out.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 5 No. 1 EVENING GLORY– ($6.50)

Banking on some improvement from EVENING GLORY in Race 5 of the day. The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained galloper was solid after a tardy start when resuming over the 1100m on Ballarat Cup day before battling into 8th position at Sandown on December 14 over the 1200m. This looks much easier and he was unlucky not to claim a BenchMark 78 at this stage at his last preparation over the 1200m at Moonee Valley.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 4 No. 5 ALCHIAN – ($5)

ALCHIAN can go close in Race 4 of the day at Stawell. The Ben & JD Hayes-trained galloper took out his Maiden at Mornington three starts ago then was a bit plain at Werribee following that. But I didn’t mind his last start effort that saw him land in the runner-up slot at Geelong on December 16 over the 1710m. On that occasion, the three-year-old settled just worse than midfield before running on, going 3.7 lengths slower than standard benchmark, which is the best last start figure of any runner. This isn’t a strong race and the son of Churchill is racing like the step up in trip will suit.
