Wagga Tips 17/01/2023

Our form expert provides Wagga tips for today’s horse racing at Wagga Racecourse and gives his best bets.

BEST BET 🏆

Race 5:  No.1  AMEN BROTHER  ($3.50 with Palmerbet)

This looks like a race in three (on paper at least) with the locally-trained AMEN BROTHER lining up as the most prominent to take home the chocolates today. Last start, the American-bred gelding was second-up when he finished third in a 1200m Maiden Plate at his second look at the track. From a wide draw (8 of 11), he was trapped three-wide without cover all the way to the line and did well to finish on the podium after covering so much extra ground in the run. Drawn better today (after early scratchings), he maps to cross and find a sit neat mid-field (with cover) and is joined today by Jeff Penza. Third-up and fitter here, he will take beating.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 4:  No.8  SIASHA JEWEL  ($3.80 with Palmerbet)

Albury galloper SIASHA JEWEL is no stranger to the Wagga track and improving at each start this campaign, she now looks ready to pounce. Last start, the Reward For Effort mare had her seventh crack at shaking the maiden monkey and was denied again (by less than half a length) when she beat all but one home, here in a 1600m Maiden Plate. She ran that trip out, 8.2 lengths slower than benchmark, setting a new personal best and that was the best last-start effort in this field. Kayla Nisbet jumps on for her second ride on the mare and rock-hard fit now, she looks ready to take on this challenge and come out on top today.

BEST VALUE 💰

Race 2:  No.2  DALROSHIO  ($5 with Ladbrokes)

Wodonga-based galloper DALROSHIO is three starts into this preparation and will appreciate the drop in class today. Last start, the four-year-old mare came off a last-stride win on her home track in a BM64 Hcp when she took on stronger company on this track. She had the run of the race that day but found a few too strong in the run home, finishing just behind the placegetters that day. Fourth-up here, she should be at her peak now and although drawn out today, there is plenty of early speed underneath her here, giving her the chance to cross and settle just behind them. Brendan Ward sticks with her today and with a big drop in class, she looks well placed to give this a real shake.
